What is Migraine and who gets it?
Migraine is a recurrent throbbing headache that typically affects one side of the head and is often accompanied by nausea and disturbed vision. It’s a common health condition, affecting about 15% of adults in the UK with 1 in 4 women, and about 1 in 12 men developing it at some point in their life.
The Causes and Symptoms of Migraine Attacks
The precise cause of migraine is unclear, but changes in the size of blood vessels and the level of chemical messengers in the brain are thought to be responsible. This causes first constriction, then a widening and swelling of the blood vessels in the head.
Many factors can trigger migraines but usually, a combination of factors will initiate a migraine attack. Common triggers includes: tiredness, stress, dehydration, hormonal changes, changing sleep patterns, lack of food, particular food or drink (alcohol, tea, cheese, chocolate), smoking, tension, exercise or travel, too much heat, cold, light or noise, allergic reactions.
How to avoid getting a Migraine?
Try to identify your own personal trigger factors. Keeping a diary will help you to identify things you did or ate just before a migraine attack occurred.
Unfortunately migraine attacks can’t always be predicted; therefore keeping a supply of your preferred treatment handy in your handbag, briefcase, medicine cabinet, or first aid box is eminent
What are the Treatment Options for Migraines
At Allcures.com/pharmacy, we offer a wide range of treatment for migraine attacks. For all the tablets or capsules we offer, it’s essential to take them as soon as you suspect a migraine starting. This is because once a migraine is established it stops medicines being taken into the body from the stomach as well as normal. Migraine can't be cured but it can be kept under control, limiting the number of attacks and or their severity.
Medication for Migraine
1. Painkillers
Paracetamol or aspirin works well for many migraine attacks. Painkillers containing ibuprofen, such as Nurofen, aspirin or paracetamol are often the most effective and usual
treatment used for headache associated with migraine. Diclofenac in Voltarol Pain-Ease is also effective. Much stronger painkillers are available, like those containing codeine, e.g. Nurofen Plus combines ibuprofen and codeine, or Solpadeine Plus contains paracetamol and codeine.
2. Migraine Medication
Medication specifically for Migraine includes: Imigran Recovery capsules containing Sumatriptan but recently available over-the-counter. They are designed to act on the chemical imbalance that is the root cause of migraine and help to relieve the most common symptoms of an attack including headache feeling sick and sensitivity to light & noise. Migraleve pink tablets contain Buclizine, paracetamol and codeine, and will help to reduce the nausea sometimes suffered during migraine attacks along with the headache (prescription required). Nurofen Migraine and Nurofen Max Strength Migraine contain ibuprofen lysine which helps relieve pain rapidly. Anadin Ibuprofen tablets are effective as well.
3. More Further Relief
Relief can also be found in external applications such as Migraine kool N Soothe, and 4 Head, which can provide coolness and soothing relief during a migraine attack. Midrid relief capsules and Panadol extra advance are effective for migraine attacks as well.
