Los Angeles, CA - Wi-Fi has become a sought after feature in consumer electronics. Wi-Fi is poised to become an even more important purchase requirement for consumer electronics devices in 2010. Wi-Fi is fast becoming the technology of choice when it comes to connecting consumer electronics. Consumers will embrace Wi-Fi in devices ranging from TVs and home music systems to gaming devices and portable media players.
"Wi-Fi, available in computers and other electronics for years, lets users get onto the Internet when they're near a Wi-Fi-enabled router, in a so-called hotspot," says Dean Scheu, Pres. of HSI Commincations. "Users of an Apple iPod touch, for instance, can get online without having to be on a wireless plan," Scheu added. The technology is well-established in millions of home networks around the world, and the industry continues to innovate on both low-power and large-network solutions that will dramatically expand its importance in a wide variety of Smart Grid applications.
Researcher IDC predicts that more than 1 billion mobile devices will be sold and used to access the Internet in 2010.The number of Wi-Fi spots in the U.S. grew to 69,786 in Q4, up 2.9 percent over the previous quarter.More than 52 percent of public Wi-Fi spots provide connection service at no charge to users.Wi-Fi users are big shoppers, with 49 percent making purchases online while on the go, up 38 percent from first quarter of 2009. Most Wi-Fi users are connecting via mobile devices, but laptops still rule at 83 percent.
