Dear Superman, Go for it!

May 2, 2011

Author of a nonfiction ebook about self-exile from the U.S.A. encourages Superman to take his superpowers somewhere else, more in keeping with the traditional "American Way."

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
(Free-Press-Release.com) May 2, 2011 -- Dear Soupie,
So you’ve decided your fight for “truth, justice and the American way” is looking threadbare. If you’re feeling uncomfortably crass and hypocritical you either have to update your motto to something more credible like, “Oil, invasions and the American way,” or maybe “Halliburton, Goldman Sachs and the American way.” Obviously you’re not prepared to do that--though you’d be surprised at how many people are—so you might consider just leaving the land of the free and the home of the brave. A lot of people have done so and never looked back.

In fact, one of them, Michael Booth, has just written a book on the subject. The Turncoat Chronicles, published as an ebook both on Amazon.com and Smashwords.com, is a non-fiction account of the experiences of a young man, American bred and corn fed, who emerged dazed from the U.S. Army in 1968 only to find Richard M. Nixon lurking on the presidential horizon. So he went looking for a better place to make a life. Booth found that place in Spain where he woke up one morning in an orange grove, got his first glimpse of the Mediterranean and determined to put down his straggled roots in Spanish soil.

The Turncoat Chronicles documents Booth’s Spanish experience, which he characterizes as “human life on this planet,” as he progresses from a fatuous artists’ colony on the Med coast to a real Andalusian village where he still lives more than 40 years later. It was a village where every household reared a pig or two and slaughtered them each November in a two-day family project. This cooperative effort converted the pigs into sausages and other preserves which formed the basis of a 500-year-old gastronomic tradition. “Everything was so different here, then ” says Booth, “that it seemed like another dimension peopled by another species. I came from the most affluent society the world had ever seen, while most of my new neighbors here lived bare-subsistence lives. They didn’t, however, feel underprivileged. In those days in Spain poverty and pride could coexist comfortably in a single person.”

Booth’s book doesn’t limit itself to documenting the Andalusian lifestyle over the past four decades. In alternate chapters he sketches the evolution of American society throughout the 20th century. It is not a pretty picture. And, according to the author, it’s getting uglier. “The Americans had the greatest opportunity in the history of the world to elevate the human condition,” he affirms. “And they got off to a great start: ‘We hold these truths to be self evident: that all men are created equal...’”

But these high-flown words never progressed very far beyond rhetoric, according to Booth, and in recent decades that model of “fraydom and democracy” has degenerated into a series of murderous grab-and-exploit exercises, both at home and abroad. “Yes, I'm angry,” says Booth, ”the American people deserved better than to be dumbed down, fattened up and milked of their wealth by a series of dubious right-wing regimes, all in order to support an unscrupulous ‘elite’ of billionaire speculators and their unjust wars.”

So, Soupie, don’t be shy. Your disillusion with and rejection of “the American Way,” are well founded. Don’t be afraid to act on them. Let Superman take a moral stand and set a shining example. Leave the States. Are you wondering how to go about it? The last chapter of The Turncoat Chronicles is a roadmap to self exile from the U.S.A.
