FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
(Free-Press-Release.com) November 25, 2009 -- Thailand recently hosted the Bangkok International Film Festival (BKKIFF) as the premier international film festival held within the South East Asian region. Thailand is no stranger to this event, and has played the role of host since 2003. Aside from film screenings, the event also had gala shows, seminars, press conferences and the Golden Kinnaree Awards for winning films. BKKIFF 2009 saw over 15,000 attendees of movie buffs, Hollywood actors, international film crew, local celebrities, production houses, worldwide journalists and many more.

Held in September (24 - 30, 2009), the BIFF showcased 80 different films from all over the world, at affordable 100B prices (approximately $US 3) per movie. Some films were directed by veterans in the industry such as Woody Allen and Rakeysh Mehra and other films were done by inspiring talents using low budgeted productions. The two theaters that held the 80 films were both in central Bangkok – Siam Paragon Cineplex and SF World Cinema at Central World. These films would ultimately fall under one of two competitive categories – Main Competition (films by first and second time directors) and South East Asian Films (for films within the geographic region).

Due to last year’s brilliant documentary collection showcase, the BKKIFF also created a new category called ‘Documentary Showcase’ for new films of this genre. Delhi 6, one of BKKIFF’s star movies was definitely a highlight. Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra who also made Rang De Basanti of 2006 directed Delli 6. His 2006 production won him best director award at the 2006 Filmfare Awards and National Film Awards. A 111-minute feature, Delhi 6 is about Roshan (Abhishek Bachchan), a young American-Indian who returns to his motherland along with his sick grandmother so she can spend her last days in India.

Roshan is estranged to the sights and sounds of the whole colorful hustle and bustle India has to offer but finds himself growing as an individual who finds India so similar, yet so different to whom he is. Amid his adventures, he meets Bittu (Sonam Kapoor) who is searching for self-identity and expression and attempting to break free from the confinements of the Indian culture – that which Roshan develops an interest in. Delhi 6 did not win any award at this particular event but did gain publicity and spiked up a lot of DVD sales. American Born Confused Desi (ABCD) and the Namesake are also other films based on the whole American-Indian theme that are worth the Sunday afternoon and popcorn.
