DeltaWomen is petitioning to end female sexual harassment at universities in Delta State
DeltaWomen NGO is relentlessly working to end female sexual harassment in institutions of higher education in Delta State, Nigeria. The United States Department of State has labeled female sexual harassment in Nigerian universities as an epidemic. An estimated 80 percent of female students in Delta State are at one time or another harassed by their lecturers and male counterparts. However, there are no laws in place to help protect women from sexual harassment.
In order to raise awareness about female sexual harassment in universities, DeltaWomen has created an online petition asking authorities to take the necessary steps to address this problem. This petition has already been signed by people all around the world, and it will also be distributed in hard copy to women all over Delta State to continue to gather more signatures. If you are interested in signing the online petition, you can do it by visiting http://www.thepetitionsite.com/1/end---startfragment--female-sexual-harassments-in-delta-state-educational/.
Elsie Ijorogu-Reed first formed DeltaWomen through her desire to provide a sense of empowerment to the women of Delta State. Her desire to give back has helped DeltaWomen offer support for basic needs and human rights. Today, DeltaWomen works to teach social, political, and economic empowerment to women.
DeltaWomen has a four-part vision that helps guide its cause:
* To be a contributory force in the emancipation of women by helping them cope with the rigors of the 21st century.
* To assist in the dispensing of myths that have held women bound to the shackles of the past.
* To encourage women’s voices to be heard and respected by all.
* To lift the profile of Delta women and enable them to take a seat in driving Delta State and Nigeria forward.
