New York-AmericanLP, a Democratic Super PAC, announced today that as part of its January “Messing with Mitt” campaign it will begin airing two new attack ads in New Hampshire. The ads are designed to mock GOP frontrunner Mitt Romney by highlighting his “plastic” nature. “Mitt Romney v. Ken doll” is a new 30 second TV ad produced to highlight the inauthenticity of Romney’s political beliefs. A second ad, “Stretch Romney” will also be aired to highlight the lack of core political values held by Romney. The first dozen airings of the commercials will begin airing on WMUR TV in Manchester after Saturday night’s debate.

TJ Walker, AmericanLP founder explains:

“Republican and Democrats across the spectrum can agree on one thing: Mitt Romney appears to have no core convictions. While Romney might be bright, disciplined, hard-working and successful, he doesn’t have any core convictions. There is something profoundly inauthentic and unreal about a man who will change his position on any issue, any time, and always from less popular positions to more popular positions. There is one word that continually pops up anytime political observers gather to discuss Mitt Romney: ‘Plastic.’ We at AmericanLP are going to further brand Romney as plastic by running a series of ads that show the striking similarity between Mitt Romney and popular children’s plastic dolls, such as the ‘Ken Doll’ and ‘Stretch Armstrong.’ While our ads use humor and mockery, we are deadly serious in our goals and message. We want Republican Party voters as well as Democrats and Independents to start viewing Romney as a comical character so devoid of authenticity and core values that he is fundamentally unfit for the Presidency.”

Walker further explained that the inspiration for the ad campaign came from a crowd-sourcing experiment in the blogosphere. In December, members of the Democratic-leaning blog Daily Kos were asked to submit ideas for anti-Romney ads using children’s dolls. AmericanLP then produced several ads. The finished ads were then voted on at Daily Kos and other Democratic-leaning blogs. There was a virtual tie for “Mitt Romney V. Ken Doll” and “Stretch Romney” so both ads will be aired on broadcast TV.

Walker further explained the ads and the organization’s goals at a press briefing at AmericanLP’s TV studio/headquarters in Midtown Manhattan

AmericanLP started in December 2011 and is most known for its “French Romney” TV ad (insert video)that went viral and was called “the funniest ad of the primaries…is reminiscent of Woody Allen’s ‘What’s Up, Tiger Lily?” by Talking Points Memo. The ad was also profiled on CBS News, France 24, The New York Times, Wall Street Journal, Politico and most major media outlets in the U.S.
