A semi driver had ingested drugs including methamphetamine and marijuana before his vehicle ran a red light and slammed into a pickup truck, seriously injuring the other driver.
Dennis L. Geisler, 52, Liberty, was preliminarily charged with driving while intoxicated causing serious bodily injury, a Class D felony carrying a standard 18-month prison term.
Geisler's semi, hauling a grain trailer, collided with a pickup truck driven by Charles Peterson, 82, of Winchester, at U.S. 27 and Greenville Pike about 12:45 p.m
Peterson was taken by ambulance to St. Vincent Randolph Hospital, and later flown by medical helicopter to Miami Valley Hospital in Dayton, Ohio. He remained in that facility's intensive care unit on Wednesday, city police said, and was believed to be in stable condition.
Geisler's southbound vehicle entered the intersection on a red light before striking Peterson's truck. Investigators said they found no evidence Geisler had applied his brakes or tried to avoid hitting the other vehicle.
A blood test showed that Geisler had meth, marijuana and amphetamines in his system at the time of the accident.
They found a tube containing meth in Geisler's shirt pocket; a pipe and a plastic bag, each containing marijuana, in a nearby field; a plastic container holding more meth in a nearby church parking lot, and an Oxycontin pill in the Liberty man's glove compartment.
A witness told police he saw Geisler walking in the field, "throwing items," immediately after the crash.
Geisler was being held in the Randolph County jail on Wednesday under a $5,000 bond. He is also expected to face drug-related charges.
Mistaken information apparently phoned into dispatchers resulted in some media reports Wednesday that Peterson had died of his injuries.
