The loss of a tooth or teeth can be caused by a number of factors, from tooth decay to periodontal disease to injury.
If you are considering replacing a missing tooth or teeth and are in good general health with an otherwise sound dental foundation, you may be a candidate for dental implants. Dental implants are a durable, functional and natural-looking option for restoring your smile.
However, only a consultation with an experienced cosmetic dentist can determine if dental implants are the best choice for you. Certain medications, some health conditions and other physical factors may prevent dental implants from being right for you.
Characteristics of viable dental implant candidates include:
• Adult
• Healthy gums
• Ample bone structure in which to anchor the dental implants into the jaw
• Willingness to care for your dental implants and your surrounding teeth and gums
Although dental implants are an effective treatment for many adults with a missing tooth or teeth, dental implants are not for children, whose jaw bone structure is still developing. For some adults who lack sufficient bone structure to support the dental implant posts, bone grafting may be performed to create a substantial base for the posts, which act as replacement “roots.”
In addition to age, there are other factors that preclude some patients from being good candidates for dental implants.
It is typically recommended that pregnant women postpone receiving dental implants until after childbirth. If you have gum disease, restorative treatment may be necessary prior to undergoing the dental implant procedure.
Some medical conditions, such as diabetes or high blood pressure, can increase your risk for dental implant failure. Likewise, regular smoking and the consumption of alcohol can also heighten the chance that your dental implants will fail.
If your cosmetic dentist does not believe that dental implants will be effective for your specific condition, he or she may recommend another tooth-replacement option such as dental bridges or dentures.
