DePuy’s recall on ASR devices affects 93,000

Bay Shore, New York, United States of America (Free-Press-Release.com) April 5, 2011 -- BIRMINGHAM (MARCH 22,2011)- DePUy Orthopaedics has announced a voluntary recall on its ASR XL acetabular hip system and the DePuy ASR Hip resurfacing system , almost 93,000 individuals are now subject to another hip implant surgery . The hip recall is based on the high revision rate of the said hip replacement systems that reached up to 12%-13%. This hip recall came after years of published reports, studies and data that shows that there is a malfunction of the device and that it causes patients big trouble.

Patients who had their hip surgeries on or after July 2003, the date of the manufacturing of the two defective ASR products are subject to this recall, meaning those patients will have to undergo another surgery called the revision surgery to replace the old defective hip implant with a new one.

Patients who had these defective hip replacement systems are complaining of lingering pain, swelling and difficulty in walking. Actually, these are normal symptoms after you had a hip surgery; however, if the patient is suffering for a long time already, it calls for an alarm. DePuy has proposed to cover the expenses of the affected patients on matters that are associated with the hip replacement system recall.

“We regret that this recall will be concerning for patients, their family members and surgeons. We are committed to assisting patients and health care providers by providing information through multiple channels and paying for the cost of doctor visits, tests and procedures associated with the recall.” DePuy orthopaedics president, David Floyd said. Although the manufacturing company has promised financial assistance regarding to these matter, some patients still seek the help of some hip recall lawyers for advises about legal steps they could take against the manufacturing company, believing that they deserve more than the assistance the company has offered because of the pain and suffering they experienced because of the defective hip replacement systems.

Lawyers representing the victims are seeking to consolidate lawsuits in a multidistrict trial. The motion that request for the consolidation is filed with the U.S. Judicial Panel on Multidistrict Litigation on behalf of someone who has originally filed the manufacturer a lawsuit in California federal Court.
