Desert Expedition Expert Sam McConnell Heads Fieldskills’ Desert Safety Course This Summer

Desert expeditions have been in Sam McConnell’s blood since he worked as a desert guide in the Namib and Kalahari for over ten years, spending time with the San Bushmen and the Himba of the Kaokoveld. In 2002 Sam upped the ante and trekked solo and unsupported across the Namib Desert, from the Skeleton Coast to the Dead Vlei. This epic desert expedition first was made into a TV documentary which was broadcast worldwide and Sam was awarded a fellowship at the Royal Geographical Society. For the last five years Sam has been concentrating on running expeditions, treks and desert leadership programmes in the Sinai Desert.

This summer Sam will be running Fieldskills’ Desert Safety course where he will train people planning on carrying out their own desert expeditions, leading desert expeditions for other companies, or those going on an adventure holiday who simply want to learn more about the environment they’re travelling to, to get the most possible from their time there.

The desert is an environment of extremes: heat, dry, and cold. This means that certain skills are needed to stay safe on desert expeditions: environmental awareness combined with everyday practical skills. Sam McConnell will use his years of desert experience and expedition leadership to teach people about desert hazards, kit and equipment, and navigating in the desert. He will also run through living and camping in the desert together with some considerations of planning trips and leading groups. The practicalities of setting up desert camps as well as the wider picture of emergency planning and vehicle use will also be covered.
