Designing Future Designers at Katonah Art Center

Katonah, New York, United States of America (Free-Press-Release.com) February 20, 2012 -- Katonah, New York, February 20, 2012; The Katonah Art Center is getting into the fashion business, or rather is looking to get you into it. Gwen Sargeant, a new instructor at KAC, is offering two fashion classes: Fashion Illustration and Rags to Runway.

“Fashion Illustration is more of an introduction to fashion design. I encourage my students to really understand the structure of the garment, how it folds,” says Ms. Sargeant. “Rags to Runway is more about the sewing. Students make everything from swim wear to evening wear. Some even make their prom dresses.”

Ms. Sargeant was first introduced to fashion through her mother, who made all of her clothes and taught her how to sew, and through Ebony Fashion Shows in her hometown of Syracuse, New York. She was accepted into the Fashion Institute of Technology, where she is currently a professor.

Ms. Sargeant was also one of the founders of the Fashion and Arts Xchange Group, an organization that helps women of color in the fashion industry. They hold networking events, award ceremonies, and have created a platform in Midtown Manhattan for women of color designers.

Ms. Sargeant is very excited to be working at KAC. When asked what her prospective students should know about her, she said:

“I’m every passionate but I’m also very serious. I know what I’m talking about. Fashion is about more than just what you see in your head, it’s about what’s in style, what the customer wants. It’s about seeing the entire picture.”
