August 16, 2011 – Amidst global economic uncertainty, Queensland, Australia’s second largest state has led record levels of the nation’s employment growth.
According to the ABS employment data revealed recently, with over two-thirds of Australia’s jobs growth in July, Queensland has maintained the employment momentum as over 2,200 of Australia’s 3,000 jobs are being created in Queensland.
Andrew Fraser, Queensland’s Treasurer and Minister for State Development and Trade, said that Queensland’s record of over two-thirds of the nation’s jobs growth in July is a boost to business confidence.
Furthermore, Minister Fraser said that with this July’s record job growth, this would be Queensland’s fourth month of consecutive jobs growth Queensland was hit hard by the floods and Tropical Cyclone Yasi which has interrupted the 16 month streak from July 2009 to December 2010.
With Queensland two giant Coal Seam Gas to Liquefied Natural Gas (CSM-LNG) projects currently in the construction phase, representing $31 billion in committed capital expenditure, expecting to invest $50 billion in the state’s industry, many jobs have been created.
The government of Queensland remains to be committed in the creation of 100,000 jobs in this term now with 21,500 to go. It was forecasted that Queensland will need to fill about 140,000 jobs over the next two years.
Though communities were hit hard by the recent natural disasters, many of Queensland’s key industries and regions were unaffected or had now fully recovered.
Minister Fraser further said that by no means does Queensland is out of the woods though the opening up of significant CSG reserves, which was expected to create 18,000 jobs over the next four years and the anticipated total investment in gas extraction, pipeline and processing plants for this sector which was estimated to be around A$40 billion over the next decade, would certainly drive economic growth and would be a real benefit to Queensland.
Now with this significant investment pipeline ready to drive economic growth, the government should now stick to their plans to invest in infrastructure and attract new business, according to Minister Fraser.
As the state feels the chronic skills shortages kick in, the Federal Government has recently allocated 16,000 places for the Regional Sponsored Migration Scheme to make it easier for employers to recruit workers from overseas, and to ease the path of temporary workers to permanent residency.
Australian employers are now looking for skilled workers who want to work in Australia.
