Detail2Retail Comment on Fluctuating Retail Market

UK retail accounts for one tenth of the UK's economy, and in September UK retailers saw their worst performance for 16 months. 24% of retailers said sales were higher than the same month in 2010, while 39% reported a fall. The CBI (a UK lobbying group, speaking for 240,000 businesses) blamed rising unemployment, low wage growth and high prices driven by inflation for this fall.

The CBI also noted that although high street sales were "sluggish", the pace of the decline had stabilised. Shoppers continued to rein in consumer spending, with retailers now expected to tighten their belts as increased utility costs coincide with the approaching winter months.

"October will be challenging, but at Detail 2 Retail we think November sales will see a temporary increase in sales due to savvy shoppers bringing forward some of their Christmas purchases to take advantage of early seasonal offers," commented a spokesperson for Detail2Retail. "The increased trend should continue into December with like for like sales performance expected to be substantially better than last year, which saw sales suffer due to the bad weather and effects of the snow. Looking beyond Christmas, we see sales volumes remaining challenging before recovering later in 2012 as inflationary pressures ease and the UK economy recovers."
