Determine Skin Tone

Although your true skin color may be masked by blemishes, scars or discoloration, it is possible to determine your tone quite easily with any of the following methods:

Preparation - At least 15 minutes prior to testing your skin color, thoroughly wash your face, chest and neck with a gentle cleanser. Pat the area dry with a soft, clean towel. Do not apply any sunscreen, moisturizer or makeup!

Gold & Silver Test - While wearing a white shirt and standing in front of a well-lit mirror (avoid fluorescent lighting), hold both a piece of gold foil and a piece of silver foil (approximately 8-inches by 11-inches) about 3-5 inches in front of and on either side of your face. The foil that makes your skin look best, with a healthy glow determines the tone of your skin. If the GOLD foil brings a healthy glow to your face, your tone is WARM. Alternatively, should the SILVER foil make your skin look healthier, your skin tone is considered COOL.

White Paper Test - Since most of us don't have sheets of gold foil sitting around, you may choose to use this method. Again, while wearing a white shirt and standing in front of a well-lit mirror (avoid fluorescent lighting), hold a piece of either white paper or white cloth (approximately 8-inches by 11-inches) beside your face. Should your skin appear YELLOW OR GOLDEN, your skin tone is WARM. Alternatively, if your skin appears ROSY OR BLUISH-RED your skin tone is COOL.

Behind the Ear Test - With the help of a friend, pull your ear forward to get a clear view of the skin in the crease behind your ear, which will confirm your true skin tone.
