Though the navratras are almost over with a day left, there is still time to head for places where you can have an outing and enjoy the food. Gone are the days when people could not eat out because the restaurants didn’t sell vrat ka khana. Two such places, one a speciality restaurant – The Indian Accent, the other in a food court – Eatopia at India Habitat Centre have vrat food that is great on the palate. Head for Indian Accent at The Manor in Friends Colony (West). Not only is the food here prepared in butter and ghee, it is sumptuous and absolutely fantastic. A word of caution – as the food is prepared in butter it is on the heavy side; so ensure that you go on an empty stomach in order to enjoy the thali. But like chef Manish Mehrotra tells you what is the point of eating vrat ka khana if it is not cooked in ghee.

A word of advise before you start. Eat little portions of everything that it in the thali even if you are unable to stop yourself. And you would find it difficult to put your spoon down. The chironji ki daal is the high point of the thali as also is the aloo tikki that is pan fried and served with a tiny dollop of fresh butter. As is the sitaphal ki sabzi. Taking a cue from a Thai dish, the recipe has a unique combination of red chillies, basil and the sweet flavour of the pumpkin.

The reason why one must eat small portions is because of the desserts that form a part of the three course meal. From fruits petits to charnamrit shots to kheer brulee. Chef Manish tells you that the perfect way to have the kheer brulee is to have a bite of the kheer and a small sip of the charnamrit. “This is so that the sweetness of the kheer is balanced out with the yogurt and milk. The charnamrit also acts as a mouth cleanser,” Mehrotra says.

However, if you are in a hurry and need to grab a bite quickly and head back to work, the thali at Eatopia in India habitat Centre is just what you need. Priced at Rs 120 (inclusive of taxes), this thali is not just value for money. It is tasty and so filling that you might have to skip a meal. But then that is what vrats are all about – giving your stomach a break from the usual daal, roti.
