According to Government statistics, only 120,000 homes were built last year – the lowest since records began and a figure which only goes halfway to meeting the level of demand. Such a downturn once again raises concerns that young people are finding it virtually impossible to get on the housing ladder.

As such, since 2007 there has been a steady decline in the number of properties springing up, from 207,000 to 157,000 the following year, 124,000 last year and down to the current record low.

Specifically in relation to the South West, the Department for Communities and Local Government’s ‘Net supply of housing: 2010-11’ report indicated that a ‘similar number of homes were added’ in the region.

“While the figures are obviously disappointing on a national level, it is reassuring that the South West hasn’t experienced a drastic drop in housing supply as compared to places like London and the North West,” added Heritage Homes. “Potential buyers should take heart from this as there are properties out there waiting to be snapped up thanks to thriving new build companies such as Heritage Homes.”
