bring the Indian Cinema, popularly known as
‘Bollywood’ closer to you through this column. You
have liked my journey of cinema, it makes me really
happy…The journey is still continuing…It will

always continue…because that is what I have learnt
from my life…to move on the path of selfexpression…
through cinema.
Bollywood is popularly known for the Hindi films,
full of songs and dance sequences. The most
important part of these colorful song and dance
sequences is the presence of the Bollywood
Heroine…a young, hot and beautiful girl who tries
to express her emotions of love, romance and pain
through her voice, expressions, body gestures and
dance movements.
The presence of music and dance in Bollywood
cinema derives its existence from the Indian

Sanskrit classical theatre, particularly the Sanskrit
theatre. Since most of the Bollywood films are
largely an extension of the stories as laid down in
the two epics ‘Mahabharata’ and ‘Ramayana’, the
need of songs and dance in a film was a natural
transition from the theatre to the cinema. So, I
believe Bollywood has its unique style of film
making with these song and dance numbers in its
cinema.
In the initial parts of the Indian film making (in the
silent films era), the roles of the Heroine were
played by the male actors only, as the then Indian

society did not approve of the females’ presence in
the show business. But the Bollywood Heroine has
come a long way since then…In a male dominated
film industry in India, the Indian woman is
continuously making her presence felt in the show
business through her memorable performances...In
the long journey of Indian cinema, the heroine has
changed her existence from a make believe woman
to a real woman of flesh and blood on the Indian
screen…Actresses like Devika Rani, Suriayya,
Meena Kumari,Madhubala, Nargis Dutt, Wahida
Rehmaan, Nutan, Hema Malini, Zeenat Aman,

Rekha, Sri Devi, Madhuri Dixit, Kajol, Aishwarya
Rai, Rani Mukharjee, Kareena Kapoor to the new
entrant Devshi…all have proven their existence and
worth in the Indian cinema. I, as a film maker, am
always curious to know the real woman hidden in
the avatar of a Bollywood film heroine.
The other day I got a chance to meet an upcoming
Indian film actress Devshi Khanduri on the sets of
her new film ‘Chargesheet’. This film is produced
and directed by the legendary film maker and
yesteryears’ ever green hero Dev Anand. I am
grown up with the cinema of Dev Anand and I

believe he is a wonderful film producer, director

and an actor of the Indian cinema. From the black
and white era to the present day Bollywood cinema,
Dev Anand has always been a force to reckon with.
I was looking forward to know more about him
through his latest heroine Devshi and so we sat
down for a cup of coffee. Interestingly the general
talks between us turned into a serious discussion on

the existence and importance of a Heroine in a Dev
Anand film. Devshi has a very clear view of her
importance being a Dev Anand heroine. In fact I
liked the turn of talks between us and thought why
not to write an article on this issue. Gradually, the
discussion between us turned into a formal talk
between a film maker and a Bollywood Heroine, on
the importance of being a Dev Anand Heroine. So
guys, here comes a beautiful Heroine of Bollywood
on the ‘Bollywood Flyover’…for you…for the
World cinema audience…
Devshi: My warm NAMASTE to the friends from

the World Cinema…I am excited to be with you on
this ‘Bollywood Flyover’.
Sunil: So Devshi…What is this film ‘Chargesheet’
all about?
Devshi: ‘Chargesheet’ is a murder mystery which is
the film makers’ strong statement on the
involvement of the Dubai underworld, Bollywood
and the police in a mystery. Although this is a
fiction, but it is being presented with a lot of
conviction and interesting turns of events. It has a
cute love angle amidst beautiful songs sung by the
Bollywood living legend Asha Bhonsle along with
the voices of Shankar Mahadevan, Shaan, Sunidhi

Chauhan and Shreya Ghoshal. The film has a
versatile cast of Dev Anand, Naseeruddin Shah,
Aneesh Vikramaditya, Chirag Patil, Jackie Shroff,
Divya Dutta, Amar Singh (an ex-minister of the
Govt.of India) and Riya Sen (Item Number). I am
the leading lady of the film. I am sorry I can not
reveal much of the story as it may affect the entire
thrill and the suspense which you are going to
experience in this film.
Sunil: What is your character in the film?
Devshi: I am playing the character of an innocent
girl named ‘Chhamchham’. She is a poor girl,

doesn’t have even a single penny in her pocket, but
she always dreams big. She is a confident girl and
can achieve anything in her life. She is beautiful,
charming and a real persona of positivity within her.
She lives in a beautifully painted tent house erected
in a hill station called Mahabaleshwar. She makes
her livelihood by playing guitar and singing and
dancing on its melodies. There are five songs in the
film and four out of them are picturised on me. I

really enjoyed these song and dance sequences. A
guy named Ramu loves ‘Chhamchham’ like a mad
person, but she is focused on herself aspiring to be a
superstar in Bollywood. She lives her life with all
her innocence. Her hard work leads her to a right
path of victory.
Sunil: How was it working with a legendary
actor/director like Dev Anand?
Devshi: It is a great honor to work with Dev Saheb.
Its like a dream come true. He is a man with great
wisdom. I am trying to learn many things from this

great personality. You see, his persona reflects my
personality. During the film shooting when
everybody is going gaga over my performance I
simply look up at him whether he is satisfied with
my take? And if I don’t get an instant reaction in his
eyes, I know that something more is expected from
me. When I express my desire to have a re-take, he
cooperates with me and happily gives me another
take to explore the minute details of my
performance. As a director and heroine we both
have a great chemistry between us. He is a real
‘Raju guide’ to me….That was his intense portrayal

of the character by the same name in the World
classic film ‘Guide’ that it remained in my
memories even after so many years of its release. In
fact I was not even born at that time. I believe that a
building can remain strong only if it has a strong
foundation and one should never forget this. So Dev
Sahab is a strong foundation in my carrier. He is the
one who believed in me and gave me the first break
in my life to portray this beautiful character. I will
always remain thankful to him throughout my life.
Sunil: Did you ever feel that you are working with a

director of an 85 plus age? Do you think at this age
he justifies his film making style with the changing
times and with the present film making subjects and
treatments in Bollywood?
Devshi: Come on, he is Dev Anand…an evergreen
Dev Anand. The way he carries himself he looks
younger than the present day young generation. His
rich experience of more than 60 years of the film
making flows in his thoughts and in his film
making. One of his legendary films ’Hare Rama
Hare Krishna’ was produced by him at that time
when people in India were not even aware of the

Hippy culture and presence of drugs in the society.
The extra-marital relationships between the
characters of the film ‘Guide’ were so convincing in
their portrayal that they touched the hearts of the
then younger and older generation of India. This
was not shown so convincingly on the Indian screen
earlier. So I would like to say that this man walks 40
years ahead of his times. ‘Chargesheet’ is not a

story of the old times but a story of the today’s
youth. Dev Anand creates movies on the fresh
subjects involving different issues present in the
society.
Sunil: How does he conserve his energy at such an
age?
Devshi: I remember during the shooting of the song
‘har dil akela’ being picturised on me, I was
standing on the roof of a bus. Dev Sahab wanted to
discuss one particular action with me and so he
climbed the roof of the bus through a very tiny
staircase. Everybody was looking at him with their
mouths wide open. Let me admit it…he is a

powerhouse. I am trying to follow him to generate
that artistic energy within me. When he likes my
performance, he simply jumps from his chair in
excitement, with his both hands in his pockets. He
gives a wide smile and shouts on his mike ‘that’s it,
it’s a wonderful performance Devshi…I really love
this beautiful girl…you are a great performer’. You
see Sunil…it simply makes my day…
Sunil: Are you planning any new film with Dev
Anand?
Devshi: Yes, Dev Sahab has offered me ‘Hare Ram
Hare Krishna-Part 2’…that is his next movie.

Sunil: I have been told that you have written one
song for this film. I have heard that song. This is
truly good and especially when it comes from you at
such a young age.
Devshi: Its just a God’s grace on me. I am gifted
with the deity Saraswati’s blessings on me. And
trust me I don’t believe in age. I believe in the hard
work and try to achieve ‘my’ skies. Yes, I have
written this song named as ‘har dil akela’. It reflects
the today’s metro life when everybody is running to
chase his dreams, to make more money, to win their

love…but when everything is achieved, there lies a
stillness, a loneliness deep embedded in his heart. It
is a philosophy of life…the modern day life. The
song is sung by the living legend Asha Bhonsle.
Sunil: Devshi…how do you see yourself in the next
ten years in Bollywood? As an actor or as a
lyricist?
Devshi: Both…I wish to see myself conquering
billions of hearts worldwide with both these arts.
Sunil: Are you writing lyrics for other films too?
Devshi: See Sunil, acting is my ‘heart’ and the
lyrics are my ‘soul’, but sorry, I don’t wish to sell

my soul to everybody. I wish to give my lyrics to

only those people who can do justice with the
inherent meanings of these songs. Recently I have
written a song namely ‘Gods’ beautiful child’ for
one of the Non-Governmental Foundation in
Mumbai, for the awareness of the importance of the
people who have lost their beauty in the man-made
circumstances…be it an accident or a forced cruelty
by the means of violence.

Sunil: Devshi, please tell me more about you…your
education, your up-bringing and about your parents.
Devshi: I am proud to be a girl from the shores of
the Holy Ganga (‘Ganges’ as the western World
knows). I was brought up amidst the chanting of
Holy mantras and the sounds of temple bells and the
Shankhas. I am the only child of my parents. I am a
graduate in psychology. My dad’s name is Mr.
Parmanand Khanduri. He is a bank employee. My
mother Mrs. Saroj Khanduri is a house wife. I
belong to a very simple family. The lessons of
humanity and values were taught to me by my

humble parents. They believed in simple living and
the high thinking. As a person I believe I am a very
simple person. All kind of art forms attract me. I
write stories, I recite my lyrics…I do painting and
of course I am an actor. See Sunil, I am a girl who
wants to explore each and every part of the beauty
of this universe. Writing, painting, acting and dance
are just my effective tools in that search. I think I
am a good human being. I pray well for others. I am
involved in the social activities too. I believe in
thinking big…I can feel that the whole world is

mine and I belong to the whole world. I love
dancing. When I dance I believe I am near to God
during those moments. I feel contented…I feel
happy when I finish my performance. These are the
moments of bliss…that eternal bliss which makes
me a part of that almighty God…I cant’ see
anybody in pain. I think I am an emotional girl. I
always flow with the emotions but I try to be
completely practical in my professional life too. I
think I am adhyatmic (a Spiritually awakened
person). I have read the Holy book Gita (Hindu
Epic) many a times. It gives me power and

enlightenment. Sometimes I behave like a kid but at
times I can feel a serious thinker within me. I can
see myself like a rainbow…full of colors...the
variant colors. Sunil…I love myself honestly.
Sunil: Wow Devshi…I am truly impressed by you.
Tell me, how and when did you land up in
‘Bollywood’…the city of dreams?
Devshi: I was living in Dehradun, a very small
town. My artistic and aesthetic hunger was bigger
than the tiny town Dehradun could have fed me
for…so it was natural that I was looking forward to

some bigger opportunities. These opportunities were
lying in Bollywood. So, I was here…in this big
world of cinema… See, I am an ardent fan of Dev
Anand, the legend of Indian cinema…the ever green
Hero. I wanted to see and meet this man who is a
school of cinema in himself, who had given the
fashion a new trend with each of his new films. He
has remained as an ‘icon’ to the generations after
generations in this pre and post independent India. I

am truly lucky. I was looking forward to a chance to
meet him in person. I had nothing special in my
mind except to see my iconic person. And
interestingly when the chance came, it was in the
form of an offer to work with Dev Sahab…in his
new film ‘Chargesheet’. I was simply jumping with
joy…I was a new heroine of Dev Anand…the man
who had launched the most beautiful leading girls
of the Indian cinema…the legendary Zeenat Aman
and Tina Munim (Ambani). It was a great thought.
Am I going to carry forward that legacy of heroines
of Dev Anand? Wow…it made me so happy.

Sunil: How was your first day of shooting with Dev
Anand? Were you afraid of his magnanimous
stature?
Devshi: No, rather it was the most entertaining day
of my life. Dev Sahab made me so comfortable that
I was not afraid at all. I think I had fallen in love
with the camera the moment I faced it…It was a
love at first sight. The first day of shooting was full
of excitement. I really enjoyed working with Dev
Sahab. He simply infused his energy within me.
Sunil: When is the film slated for release?
Devshi: February’2011.
Sunil: Ok…now lets move ahead to one of the main

issues of our discussion…the place of a heroine in a
Bollywood film. Are you satisfied with the kind of
roles being offered to you? Are not the subjects of
these films male dominated?
Devshi: Sunil, I am convinced that the Bollywood
heroines play a very important role in the making
and development of the Bollywood cinema. All
legendry movies here have been the love stories.
And as always, the heroine of a love story is the
most integral part of it. We have enormous
examples of the all time big love-tales like ‘Mughle-
Azam’, ‘Guide’, ‘Love Story’, ‘Tere Naam’,

Dilwale Dulhaniya le Jayenge’, Maine Pyar Kiya’,
Kuchh Kuchh Hota Hai’ and ‘Hum Aap ke Hain
Kaun’ etc. All these movies have been the great
love stories and some of the most glamorous ladies
of Bollywood cinema had charmed billions of
spectators around the world in these films with their
Infocus Magazine.com - Devshi carries forward the Dev Anand’s Legacy 12/3/10 3:46 PM

persona. If we talk about English cinema then we
have some of the fantastic examples of the films

like ‘Titanic’, ‘Troy’ ‘Pretty Women’ and the latest
being ‘Avtar’. I am not at all dis-heartened with the
male dominated stories. I simply refuse a film if it
has nothing substantial for me. I am a choosy actor
and I can choose whatever I feel like. Nobody can
force a subject on me if I don’t wish to do it…
simple. Sunil, I know it is a male dominated
industry but now the time is changing fast. Female
actors are performing equally good in the strong and
powerful narratives. Indian filmmakers are now
opening up in numbers to produce the female

oriented movies. Films like ‘Fashion’, ‘Sangharsh’,
‘Mother India’, ‘Lajja’ and ‘Satta’ have proven it. I
believe the ‘change’ is a law of nature and I am sure
this ‘change’ will effect Bollywood’ soon as it had
done with Hollywood.
Sunil: Don’t’ you feel that generally the roles being
offered to the Bollywood Heroines are just the
glam-doll roles?
Devshi: True, most of the movies here are like that
only but not the all ones. As for me I cant’ do a
mere glam-doll kind of dummy character. If one is
able to find a spark, only then he can burn a fire out

of it. For me it is a big ‘bye’ to a subject if it cant’
offer me a challenge to prove my acting prowess.
Sunil: Do you have any inhibitions to expose your
body in films?
Devshi: No…not exactly. I believe that if my body
exposure takes the story to a better level and
enhances its beauty than why not…? After all I
have a beautiful body. There is nothing wrong in it.
But I will not do the skin show without a genuine
demand of the script for it.
Sunil: Where do you see the fault in fewer
productions of the female-centric films in
Bollywood?

Devshi: Actually film making has become a pure
business now. Very few films get success on the box
office. Producers try to avoid taking big risks. That
may be the reason that producers feel secured in
investing in the male oriented scripts. But some of
the creative film makers like Dev Anand, Madhur
Bhandarkar, Deepa Mehta, Gurinder Chaddha and
Meera Nair have guts to face the challenge. These
film makers believe in their subjects and have more
faith in presenting their cinema as an art form rather
than a pure business. They project the hero and the

heroine on equal grounds in their films and they
have found success in their efforts. Their films have
proven their worth artistically and commercially
Infocus Magazine.com - Devshi carries forward the Dev Anand’s Legacy 12/3/10 3:46 PM
http://www.infocus-magazine.com/article/BollywoodFlyover/480/ Page 9 of 12
both. Generally the commercial film makers don’t
give much importance to the subject and they rely
more on the name and presence of the hero only. I
strongly believe that the subject is the main hero of
the film. This fact will surely be accepted by the
spectators.

Sunil: Do you feel that the previous years’ actresses
like Meena Kumari, Nargis Dutt and Smita Patil
have now lost somewhere in the history of Indian
cinema or are they still alive in the present
generation actresses?
Devshi: No, they are not lost. Are not we discussing
them at this moment? But sincerely I get afraid to
know that the depth in the performance of few of
the present day heroines have been not up to the
mark . They have the potential but they don’t wish
to explore the depths of their inherent talent. I am a
positive person. I believe in the cycle of nature. A

day has to come again after every night. That
glorious era of the serious film making with the
great acting skills of female actors will come back
soon. I am afraid that the youngsters today join the
film industry more for its glamour that the art within
it. This is not a medium for the mere skin show but
a continuous journey of living a new character with
every new film. Every character has its own life and
as an actor this is my ‘KARMA’ to live the minute
details of all its events. I need to portray the
character in its entirety. It has to look real and not a

fake or imposed one. A mere eye contact or a little
smile can produce a pure romance of the character
if it is felt deeply and enacted well by the actor,
whereas a full-fledged dim-lighted bed sequence
may not prove its worth if it is done as an halfhearted
gesture. It would sure appear to be a fake
attempt by the actor. Actresses like Meena Kumari,
Madhubala and Nargis Dutt have proven it with
their immense potential and I believe that the same
should be followed by the younger generation today.
One should not present the Bollywood heroine as a

sex object only, but a woman of flesh and blood
with immense emotions within her.
Sunil: Devshi, suppose you are offered a powerful,
convincing character in a small-budget film but
simultaneously you get an offer to play a glam-doll
role in another big-budget hero-centric Bollywood
film, which film will be your preference?
Devshi: I will prefer the small budget film which
may offer me a strong role to play. Because I
believe in working on my own terms. I want a role
to prove myself. My motto is not the money making
here. I want to prove myself as a good actor. If I

have fire within me I will be able to prove myself
even in small budget movie. On the other hand if I

get a big budget movie but without a substantial
character, then how can I open my wings to fly? I
will feel like caught up in a prison. Sunil, I want to
fly high…very high. I wish to touch the limits of
the sky with no restrictions at all.
Sunil: Do you see yourself making a film as a
director in your future?

Devshi: May be…but first I want to achieve my
goal as an actor.
Sunil: Will your directorial venture be a strongcontented
low budget film or a typical song &
dance equipped Bollywood film?
Devshi: I love challenges. My directorial film will
be something different. A challenging and powerful
subject, full of love and little tadka of Indian spices
in it. It will bring a smile on the faces of the
audience with a thoughtful and intelligent comedy
in it. And definitely it will be loaded with good and
peaceful music and dance in it. And yes, I sure

would like to give a nice message of human values
and emotions through this film. As I strongly
believe, the conviction and strength of the subject
will be my real hero.
Sunil: Have you ever been exposed to the world
cinema?
Devshi: Yes, I love to see the meaningful and
entertaining cinema the world produces.
Sunil: Who are your favorite actors in Hollywood
and explain why you like them?
Devshi: I like Julia Roberts, Meryl Streep, Angelina
Jolly and Kate Wins let, Leonardo De Caprio, Will
Smith, Rock, Sylvester Stallion, Dustin Hoffman

and Tom Cruise. I like these actors because of their
great performances and the way they present
themselves in public life.
Sunil: If given a chance what character you would
like to play, I mean the one which have been played
earlier by some other actor?
Devshi: I would like to play the characters of Kate
Wins let in the film ‘titanic’. And in Indian films…I
would like to play the character of Madhubala in the
film ‘mughl-e-azam’, Sridevi in ‘sadma’ and
Wahida Rehmaan in the film ‘guide’.
Sunil: Now getting to a little change of subject

Devshi. Are you a religious practitioner?
Devshi: Yes…partly, by birth I am a Hindu
Brahmin girl. But the religion in which I believe
most is the humanity and love. I don’t believe in the

racial discrimination or the castism. I love every
creature made by the almighty God, may it be a
living or a non-living thing. I can feel him within
me in all the present forms…may it be the nature or

wind or sun light or water or fire…everywhere. I
can smell him…I can feel him the moment I am
close to the nature. I thank him every day. He has
blessed me with the beauty of body and mind both.
He gave me good health, good parents and a bright
future ahead. He gave me lots of love and peace.
Sunil: Interesting…so Devshi…what does
spirituality mean to you?
Devshi: See, I am a modern girl, but spirituality is
in each and every part of my being. It makes my
heart more kind and helps me to know myself more.
It makes me a better human being.

Sunil: Intelligent reply Devshi…I can see poetry in
these thoughts. Oh, yes, I remember..Why don’t you
recite any of your new poetry to me..?
Devshi: Ok…let me try this…yes…Ok. Here are
few lines for you...Its title can be ‘LOVE IS MY
RELIGION’:
Love is my religion…humanity is my emotion…
To love God’s creature…I don’t need a reason…
My heart is kind, which really beats…I wanna
help who really needs…
My heart is full of Love…I wanna flow, please
let me go…
Because I don’t believe in the boundaries of
land…

The whole World is mine, because I love them…
My romance too is not restricted to the men…
I romance with the nature, with the moon, with
blooms…
I feel my love growing beyond the infinity…
Love is my first priority…
Love is my religion, humanity is my emotion…
Sunil: Wow Devshi, these are truly wonderful lines
.They reflect the beauty of your mind. Ok Devshi…
lets get back to our chat. Are you open to the
proposals to act in International films?
Devshi: Yes, I want to work worldwide. I want that
the world should know me as an able actor from

Bollywood. I honestly wish to be a part of this
magnanimous world cinema. And very soon I am
going to get my own share of the International
exposure with my new movie “the ganga tales” after
the release of my current film ‘Chargesheet’. It will
comprise an eminent star cast from the Hollywood
and Bollywood both. I am going to play the leading
lady of the film opposite an American actor (under

consideration at this moment). I am desperately
looking forward to meet the world with a powerful
character of a ‘fairy’ in this film. I am extremely
happy to do this film with you.
Sunil: Yeah… I too would love to work with an
intelligent and a talented actor like you…So Devshi,
it was great talking to you. My best wishes are
always with you and I hope to see you scaling the
bigger heights in your film carrier. All the best to
you.
Devshi: Thank you very much Sunil. It was great
talking to you on these various issues. I am

desperately looking forward to work with a creative,
intellectual and talented director like you. Thank
you so much. I thoroughly enjoyed talking to you.
Sunil: The same here Devshi. Good Luck...
So friends, this was Devshi Khanduri for you. An
upcoming and talented heroine from Bollywood. I
believe that Devshi is going to build a powerful and
strong bridge with her acting assignments in these
two parts of the film making world...Hollywood and
Bollywood.
As always, I believe that the world is an extended
family… I see my column ‘Bollywood Flyover’ as a

flyover joining Bollywood to its global spectator…I
shall be back next time with another step over on
Bollywood Flyover…Cheers!
