Digital Comics: 'Shadowbinders' Webcomic Offers Steampunk, Fantasy, Magic and Mecha

A mysterious ring left to her by her grandfather has transported her to another world, where she meets a roguish young mage named Crimson Rhen, and the crew of his airship, The True North.

That's how the Shadowbinders comic begins, but where it ends is still a closely guarded mystery.

Created by Disney comics alumn Thom Pratt (drawing under the pen name of “Kneon Transitt”) and his wife Kambrea, the Shadowbinders webcomic set sail online in August of 2010 and hasn't slowed down since.

Now in its fourth chapter, Shadowbinders has found an audience in fans of steampunk and young adult literature, in addition to fans of traditional comic books.

"We've somehow managed to pull in a diverse readership that's outside of the comic shop crowd," adds Thom Pratt. "Our readers are very dedicated, and have been absolutely awesome."

While the comic series is available online for free, a graphic novel containing the first three chapters will be released later this year by the couple's imprint, Clownfish Media.
