Back in my single days, I had a girlfriend once, beautiful, really just an amazing physical specimen. The first few months were great – always together, joined at the hip, you know what I mean. Everything was candy and nuts.
That is, until I tried to pursue a little time for myself and the business I had been neglecting during the whirlwind romance. That’s when her behavior started to change.
Almost overnight, this stunning, intelligent woman turned into a clingy, whining monkey on my back. Seriously, I couldn’t shake her. As you can probably guess, it went downhill pretty fast and we split up a week later.
In the direct marketing business, I often see members acting the same way around prospects. Something like, “Hey, if you just let me show you the plan, I’ll buy you dinner. Sound fair?” Or leaving the prospect five or six voice mails, emailing them every day for a month.
It just makes me sick! If you have a truly amazing opportunity to share with a prospect, discuss it once, and let that be the end of it. No one is going to respect somebody groveling at their feet, begging for a scrap or a bit of attention. Have some respect for yourself and offer them the opportunity one time. Once! If they aren’t interested in your direct marketing business, cut ‘em loose! There are dozens, if not hundreds of people in a ten-mile radius of you that would kill to have you sponsor them. So why waste your time with some knucklehead who wants to see how much he can get out of you?
This business deserves your respect, and so does any prospect you decide to share it with. Create value in yourself and the world will beat a path to your door.
