Dissociative Disorders Treatment - Help Those you Care For
In order to help friends and family affected by dissociative disorders it is important to know about options for dissociative disorders treatment in St.Louis. There are various types of dissociative disorders such as dissociative amnesia, dissociative identity disorder, dissociative fugue, dissociative disorder NOS, and depersonalization disorder. The causes of dissociative disorders are varied but most develop out of severe prolonged childhood trauma. Various treatment modalities have been shown to be effective in the treatment of dissociative disorders.
Several Effective Treatment Options
Provided below are a few options for treatment:
Cognitive Behavioral Therapy - This type of therapy focuses on helping clients identify disruptive thought patterns and beliefs that have resulted from the trauma that caused the dissociative symptoms. Clinicians who utilize CBT typically help clients focus on taking back power and control over their thought processes and resulting behavior. Clients are taught affective expression and emotional regulation skills to manage the symptoms of dissociation.
Psychodynamic Psychotherapy -This type of therapy focuses on helping the patient gain insight into underlying traumas and family dynamics that have contributed to their dissociative disorder. This can include narrative or trauma reprocessing therapy as well as various expressive therapies. The therapist and client collaborate to not only help the client clarify early life experiences but also begin to incorporate this into a cohesive narrative to which the client can assign meaning.
Medication - Medication therapy can be an effective tool to help clients manage the symptoms of dissociation and PTSD. The medication which is generally prescribed for dissociative disorders includes anti-anxiety medication, Anti-depressants, tranquilizers, and benzodiazepines. Medication therapy should always be overseen by a licensed Psychiatrist.
Internal Family Systems Therapy - this approach is based on the premise that people can learn to relate to their inner emotions or “parts” from a loving, compassionate place. It provides a way for clients to focus inside on and listen to their feelings and emotions without being overwhelmed. Central to the IFS model is the idea that we are all born with a Self. This Self is who we are at our essence; curious, compassionate, and joyous. The IFS model helps clients connect with their Self and from this “self-led” place relate differently to their emotions. Also central to the IFS model is the belief that each of our parts has valuable qualities and each is designed for and wants to play a valuable role in the system. These inner parts, are forced out of their valuable roles, however, by life experiences that reorganize the system in unhealthy ways.
