Pastor Becomes First Time Author!
By: Janice Malone
Rev. Bernard Boulton is not only a minister of God’s Word but he’s also a talented wordsmith in the literary word. Earlier this year the pastor fulfilled a lifetime dream when he debuted his first novel, Do You Wanna Be Made Whole? This gripping page turner tells the tale about three men who are experiencing various problematic issues in life and are seeking to be made spiritually whole again with God through the spiritual leadership of a pastor.
Writing and publishing a book has been a goal of the pastor for as long as he can remember. “It was a childhood dream for me to be a writer. I’ve always loved books and reading for most of my life. For years I just saw myself as one day being a published author,” Recalls pastor Boulton with a smile. Five years ago he put action behind that life long dream. He initially wrote a short story about a group of men who were each having challenging issues in their lives--issues with the church; marital issues; sexual issues, etc. Each man sought help and guidance from the leadership of their pastor. “When I first started writing the story I must admit I had no idea what the entire storyline and plot would be. I just knew that I wanted the story to be about three friends dealing with life’s problems, who would later move in together in one big house.”
“Pastor Maxwell”, the book’s spiritual leader in the story, is a compilation of various pastors and ministers that Rev. Boulton says he’s admired and respected throughout his lifetime. He says, “The three male character friends in the book came directly from my imagination. But I do see a little of myself in each of them and there are some elements of their characters that come from certain brothers I’ve met over the years.”
Bernard has been a reader since the age of five. It was his cousin Yvette who placed a book in his hand and introduced him to the wonderful world of books. Throughout his life he has read fiction and non-fiction books that have gripped his imagination and made him believe in greater things. While a student in Cleveland, OH at Cuyahoga Community College, Bernard’s interest in writing was firmly planted by the encouragement of teachers and Christian mentors. He went on to not only develop his writing talents, but also his spiritual giftings when he entered the ministry at age 17. He later attended Warren Bible Institute and Moody Bible Institute and graduated from Christian Life School of Theology where he received an Associate degree in Theology.
Over the years Rev. Boulton has become a widely traveled preacher with a relevant word. He has ministered and pastored at churches through out the United States and is currently in his eighth year as the pastor of the New Mine Creek Church in Danville, Virginia. His congregants have been very enthusiastic over his new book. “My church members have been so supportive. They were some of the first customers to pre-order the book. Some sold books to their co-workers. I’ve had some tell me they can’t believe their pastor’s had all of this within me to write a novel. Some see me as a preacher and not as a writer and author, so that’s been fun to watch.” The pastor says the success of his novel has even inspired the church to start a book club.
Earlier this year Pastor Boulton did several book signings, with plans to do even more as he becomes part of various Christian conferences later this summer. In June he will be part of the Hampton Minister’s Conference, where he’ll be conducting a book signing.
The pastor has already started on his next book, which is a sequel to Do You Wanna Be Made Whole? Plans are to release the follow-up project by the end of this year. Even though Rev. Boulton is having a great time as a new author he also wants to make sure his readers get the inspiring message of his books. “After the reader finishes my book I want them to be able to say that no matter what they’ve experienced in life in the past or currently, and no matter how hard the circumstances have been, it’s the will of God for their life to be restored to wholeness again.” Pastor Boulton says book sales are good but he is more excited about the inspiring letters he’s received from readers who have found hope and encouragement with their problems after reading Do You Wanna Be Made Whole? He says, “When I get those kinds of letters and emails from readers, that’s what it’s all about and that’s a real blessing. I give God all the praise and glory!”
