Understanding Whole Body Donation
Many patients believe that having a “Pink Sticker” on their California Drivers License, makes them a donor. This is not necessarily true. While they have indicated intent that they are willing to be an organ and tissue donor, it is not an automatic or guaranteed event. In order for organ transplant donation to proceed, everything must align: a sudden and traumatic death in a hospital and kept on life support while the potential recipients and donations are arranged. Research For Life strongly encourages transplantable donation. However, since most people do NOT qualify for this, they can still support medical education and research through whole body donation. Whole body donation does not have the rigorous qualifications and specific time frames that organ donation has. While whole body donation still has qualifying, this can be done at any time leading up to time of death at need or within a few hours of death. The patient’s legacy is helping the future.
Qualifying For Whole Body Donation For Caregivers
Before approaching someone about the option of whole body donation you must do two things. Firstly, ask yourself if donation is something the patient would likely consider and secondly whether or not the donor will qualify for a donation program. If your patient has HIV/AIDS, Tuberculous, Hepatitis B or C, Rabbies, MRSA or C-Diff, than they will unlikely be accepted. If you have made a preliminary qualification and believe your patient is a good candidate for a whole body donation program, than simply call Research For Life at 800.229.3244 or download their forms online at Research For Life Forms .
Listening to the needs and expectations of your patient will help in the planning of their after death wishes. Noticing if the patient has a giving spirit or is already on the “pink sticker” program, gives you a good sense of how the patient will respond. Whole body donation is not right for everyone, but as the advocate to your patient it is your responsibility to provide all the options that are available to them. Giving the family and patient options empowers them to make the decision that is best for them.
