http://www.door-stop.co.uk Window Energy Ratings are the main cause for controversy in most quarters but doors have got in on the act too. Until recently, there’s been so little coverage on the door legislation in the trade press you might have thought they were excluded, but as the new Part L states, doors must achieve a door U-value of 1.8W/m2K or less. One of the most important aspects of the new legislation states that proof of compliance is required. And crucially, the burden of proof rests with the window or door company fitting the door. Councils are already asking for this.
So Door-Stop wrote to Dr Vince Cable, Secretary of State for Business, Innovation and Skills to find out what was really happening. Dr Cable confirmed that, yes, the legislation is going ahead and that doors are still included.
That must be a big worry if you’ve not been preparing for it, as many apparently haven’t. But we’ve made sure our customers are ready: every single Door-Stop composite door ordered online at http://www.door-stop.co.uk/ now comes with its own, individual U-value certificate, using a calculation method validated by the Building Research Establishment (BRE). All of our doors achieve a U-value of 1.8 or less – and some are even as low as 1 W/m2K.
It’s hard to see how door panels will achieve this – not to mention timber or aluminium doors. But for those whose doors do pass, if one has a certificate validated by a respected third party like the BRE, and the other has a basic ‘type-test’, it’s not hard to see which one a council – or homeowner – will choose.
