-- San Francisco Startup Aims to Give Power to the People, Enabling “Self Control” of Home, Health and Power --

SAN FRANCISCO, Calif., October 20, 2009 – dot UI, a San Francisco-based software startup, today announced that its founder and CEO, Ishak Kang will speak at the upcoming Federal Communications Commission daylong Staff Workshop on October 20, 2009 to further address broadband accessibility for people with disabilities as part of the development of a National Broadband Plan. The workshop will discuss accessibility and affordability barriers faced by people with disabilities, opportunities that broadband can present people with disabilities and policy recommendations to address these barriers and maximize opportunities. The goal of dot UI is maximizing the SmartGrid ROI by giving the consumer the ability to change their energy usage behavior and habits without disrupting their lifestyle and comfort.

In making the announcement, CEO Ishak Kang said, “dot UI is pleased and honored to be invited by the FCC to comment on accessibility with respect to broadband access and utility. Dot UI is an enabling technology that will provide power to people to control their individual environments using a multiple-screen (TV, PC, mobile device) interface as a window into what is important and critical to an efficient and effective life. We like to say that dot UI’s technology “empowers self control™.” Employing open standards, dot UI will allow people, including those with disabilities, to more efficiently manage their home power usage.”

Dot UI is a groundbreaking ecosystem of middleware that will provide an engaging user interface for realtime monitoring and control. Dot UI has created a platform to serve the digital home market through the Universal Remote Console™ (URC), the newly published ISO/IEC 24752 international standard. Designed specifically to fill the gaps among manufacturer, service provider and consumer, this technology provides more choices whenever users turn on their TV, mobile device or home computer.

Because dot UI technology abstracts the functionality of connected hardware and presents it in the form of structured data, consumers will realize the value of a more dynamic experience through a personalized user interface. In addition, the technology offers scalability and affordable customization on the consumer’s own web browser.

In actual application, dot UI technology will allow the consumer for example to optimize power consumption by programming heavy-energy use appliances to operate in the off hours when costs are lower. It will also allow the consumer to program entertainment throughout the home from a single interface. It also holds the potential to allocate health resources and interactions in ways that can reduce costs by optimizing care-giver logistics and personal health monitoring.
