DOUBLE NEGATIVE by Gloria Berneville-Claye is published

He is educated in a State sponsored Academy, where he is groomed by his intelligence Guardian Angel to head a secret Government Department dealing with threats to the State. A loner, he is a walking automaton, until a new female recruit enters his life and helps him function in society. Their first born child, a mathematical genius, must be protected from ‘the system’ to prevent her suffering his fate. But there is another shadow which neither of them foresaw; could this be their downfall?

Double Negative, a first novel, is a runaway success, throwing its widowed author, Charlie Cummins into turmoil. About the Author:

Gloria Berneville-Claye lives in Peasmarsh in Rye, England. Her husband is a retired Sea Captain so she was fortunate enough to travel the world with him to Australia, South America, Hong Kong, Japan and many other places in between. In fact, Gloria holds a steering ticket for a 68,000 ton container ship! On retirement they bought a 42ft cruiser in which they sailed up and down the canals in Europe and in the process had many adventures and met some interesting and eccentric people. Gloria has also run various businesses relating to the tourist industry and was fortunate to be chosen to appear on Anthony Gormley’s fourth plinth in Trafalgar Square as a skeleton sitting on a huge toilet, promoting the charity ‘Water Aid’.


Excerpt from the book:

“Only one category remained; the really big one. Best film. Again four nominees, four more clips, Georgina was being proposed to in this one, she accepted with a double negative, very appropriate thought Charlie, given the title of the film. There was a lot riding on this decision for all the nominees. The tension was obvious; lots of screwed-up napkins, people looking down at the floor, others looking expectantly at the stage as the envelope was torn open. Then the agony was over.

‘Double Negative.’ There was a gasp and a roar from the cast. Napkins were thrown up into the air, and this time there was a broad grin on Philip’s face. The whole production team rose as one to go onto the stage; they insisted Philip, Charlie and Elaine joined them. Charlie was very reluctant, but Philip dragged her with him.
‘I won’t go if you won’t,’ he told her. He made sure he stayed in the background; at such a time, each one of them deserved their moment in the spotlight.
The celebrations went on into the early hours of the morning. They were both going to have a thick head the next day. Charlie didn’t give a thought to Heather Greenfield, who had left the theatre and the country. She had, in fact, a very successful career in the States playing vamps and the wicked femme fatale, which appeared to be her forte.”
