http://www.lakeeriedental.comTMJ symptoms can drive a patient crazy. Imagine having ringing in your ears, with a constant headache, and extreame pain when eating. Many people who suffer from migrane headaches are not sure why they get them. Research has shown that many migrane patients actually have TMJ problems, and this causes the migrane headaches. The most frustrating problem with TMJ pain is that it is usually very correctable. The majority of Dental Schools just do not teach dentists how to properly treat TMJ patients. The majority of treatment involves making patients oral appliances, referred to as splints. These splints can be somewhat helpful, but only if they advance the mandible into the correct position. This is often not the case. Usually these splints are flat plane splints worn only at night. In order for slint therapy to work correctly the appliances need to reposition the mandible, and must be worn all the time. This involves two different splints, one for daytime use and one for evening wear. When the correct mandibular position is located, the patient can then move away from their splints, and into braces to move the teeth into that position permanantly. Once the jaw is possitioned correctly, patients usually get instant relief from the majority of their symptoms. If you or someone you know suffers from TMJ problems or gets migrane headaches, find a dentist who will use functional splints to reposition the mandible.
