According to Dr. Mullan’s Alzheimer research, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs such as Celecoxib and Naproxen do not enhance thinking abilities in older adults. The Roskamp Institute Memory Clinic in Tampa, headed by Dr. Mullan participated in the ADAPT (Alzheimer’s Disease Anti-Inflammatory Prevention Trial) which was funded by the National Institute of Aging. For this study, the clinic enrolled more than 400 seniors, aged 70 years or older, with at least one relative suffering from dementia. This group was studied for five years, undergoing memory testing each year. During the study period, one third of individuals received a sugar pill, whereas two thirds received NSAIDS (Naproxen, or Celecoxib).
Dr. Mullan’s Alzheimer research found that one of the drugs, Naproxen may cause negative effects and worsen memory or various other mental abilities. However, there is a need to conduct further study, in order to find out if these effects persist over the time, or if the individuals who performed worse on the memory testing were in the early stage of dementia. The day to day aspects of this research were supervised by Drs. Cheryl Luis and Timothy Crowell- specialists in Neuropsychology. Dr. Michael Mullan, the Director of the Roskamp Institute, was the principal investigator for the Tampa clinic and served on writing committee of the manuscript. Located in Sarasota, Florida, the Roskamp Institute is widely known for its efforts to understanding the causes and finding treatments for various neuropsychiatric and neurodegenerative disorders. The goal of the institute is to find out effective treatments for the Alzheimer disease.
