Body-hair-to-head transplantation has been on the rise among hair transplant methods. Using advanced FUE technology , body hair transplantation extracts grafts in follicular units—natural groupings of one to four hairs—from almost anywhere on the body, vastly expanding the pool of donor hair. This technique was pioneered by Dr. Sanusi Umar of the Los Angeles DermHair Clinic, and has been in development for just under a decade.

http://www.dermhairclinic.com/ Dr. Umar's article "Hair Transplantation in Patients With Inadequate Head Donor Supply Using Nonhead Hair" will be published in the Annals of Plastic Surgery’s October 2011 issue. It is the first elite resource to substantiate body-hair-to-head transplantation as a viable surgery method for the severely bald. "The present report introduces the applications of large numbers (>8000 grafts) of nonhead hair (mainly body and beard sources) in hair transplantation using the FUE approach,” Dr. Umar writes in the article, "All cases presented suffered hair loss that could not be met with the available head donor supply."
The benefits of body-hair-to-head transplantation are changing the face of hair restoration. Just a short time ago, someone suffering baldness to the point of head donor hair depletion would be considered a poor candidate for hair transplantation. Said individual would be left helpless and frustrated with no reprieve from baldness. But with the research and innovations initiated by Dr. Umar, things are different now. People with advanced androgenic alopecia, scarring from some kind of accident, or disfigurement from a previously botched hair transplant surgery are now back in the running as candidates. Their diminished head donor hair supply is no longer a deterrent on the road to restoration.
In body hair transplantation, hair can be extracted from the beard, chest, stomach, arms, and legs. Research and tests have shown that the best yield, with the most likeness to head hair, comes from the beard. Beard hair is able to grow to the longest and blend in best with the rest of the head hair, as it generally possesses a similar thickness.
In Dr. Umar’s report, he discusses the application of body-hair-to-head transplantation on three different patients, and the long-term results of each. The patients were 36, 54, and 35-year-old white males all with severe baldness for different reasons. Two had attempted previous surgeries and were left with subpar results, and the other had never had hair transplantation prior.
All three had a graft survival rate of approximately 80% or above, and all three experienced considerably successful outcomes overall. Not only do they now each enjoy a restored scalp and confidence, they also instill hope in hundreds of others with severe baldness.
If body-hair-to-head transplantation was gaining steam before, come October, this method will get a good look from a large body of medical professionals, certified plastic surgeons, and hair transplant surgeons in general. Though it is an advanced practice, requiring longer operating time and demanding a high level of skill from the practitioner, it is one that takes forth the capacity of hair restoration by leaps and bounds. In closing the article, Dr. Umar writes, “…hair transplantation from nonhead donor sources can globally restore even severe bald states in patients with inadequate hair donor supply…using nonhead hair offers new possibilities.”
