Due West Gallery (217 West San Francisco St., Santa Fe, NM) opened on the first of April this year. A Contemporary Western Art gallery, it was conceived by the artist and historian, Thom Ross, who recently relocated to Santa Fe from Seattle. This is a gallery different whose focus is on the lore, and the lure, of the American West, both past and present. The one objective that is stressed is a complete avoidance of the traditional style of “western art” which merely reproduces photographs. Due West Gallery is about interpretation, not reproduction. It is felt that there are myriad artistic possibilities contained in both the life style in the west as it exists today as well as a rich mother lode of images based on the historic past as well as the mythic components of our national myth.
The wonderful, colorful, paintings of Chuck Fulcher and Hita Von Mende capture the animals, landscapes, and activities of today’s American West. Buckeye Blake and Duke Beardsley capture today’s working cowboy, but through design and palette they create a very dynamic and vital “pop” interpretation of these iconic men. Dave Powell, Thom Ross, Maurice Turetsky, and Bob Boze Bell supply fascinating glimpses into the lives, deaths, and legends which surround some of our most popular (and controversial) Western historical figures like Wyatt Earp, Doc Holliday, Pat Garrett, and Billy the Kid (New Mexico’s favorite son.) Robert Ransom uses familiar icons of the west (horses, men, women, mountains, cowboys, dogs, and guns) and creates bright and unique paintings that are unlike any others.
Jeff Feinberg creates images on canvas using nothing but metals in a technique that can only be described as true alchemy, to create works of art that are influenced by the famous cave paintings of Alta Mira as well as the petroglyphs left here on our western landscape by the ancient Anasazi. And newcomer, Annie Horkan, captures the landscape of New Mexico in a bright and vibrant manner which is a delight to the eye and soul.
The one other requirement demanded of each artist is that they possess a sense of humor and, if you look close enough, you will see and feel this aspect in each artist’s work.
From lawmen riding out in the dead of winter in pursuit of famous outlaws, to the controversial killing of Billy the Kid late on the night of July 14, 1881; from the rodeo riders (and clowns) of today, to classic images of those quintessential American figures called cowboy heroes; from bright landscapes to brilliant iconic figures, there is something at Due West Gallery for anyone who truly loves the land and the people of our American West.
