Hall of Fame center fielder Duke Snider died today at 84
Duke played for the Brooklyn Dodgers in 1940 and 50 and moved with them to Los Angeles and played for 5 seasons. New York took three of the greatest center fielders in the history of the game there at the time, with Duke, Mickey Mantle and Willie Mays. He then played one season for the Mets and one for the Giants. He hit 407 homers, drove in runs and had a 1.333 batting .295/.380/.540 line.
He was also a baseball player my wife's favorite. Not because she has never seen him play, but he was a commentator for the Expos from 1973 to 1986. In collaboration with Dave Van Horne, was fantastic. It was a very sweet about it and worked hard to teach hockey fans of baseball. Much of what I know about baseball I learned to listen. If not already in the Hall of Fame as a player, that really should have been as a commentator.
