SAI Tutors Public Sector Division

SAI Tutors’ Public Sector Division provides tutoring services for young people who might not otherwise have access to private tuition. Our purpose is to provide of managed tutoring programmes for vulnerable young people who may be underperforming in school such as looked after children, care leavers and young people educated outside of mainstream education. We are also a tutoring supplier for the Government’s Making Good Progress initiative, aimed at children who are not performing to their potential due to a variety of factors.
Through a dedicated team experienced and trained managers and tutors, SAI Tutors has operated this dedicated unit for over five years and has established a position of clear market leadership in this field. We currently work in partnership with over seventy local and city councils as well as children’s organisations throughout the UK, organising both large and small tuition programmes. In the last academic year we provided tutors for over 2000 young people in or leaving care.

Focus and Experience

A primary focus in the public sector is the provision of tuition for looked-after children, care leavers and young people educated outside of mainstream education. Currently, over 50% of the young people tutored by SAI Tutors are from these vulnerable groups. More recently, we have become a provider for the Making Good Progress initiative of the Department of Children, Schools and Families.

Referral System and Tuition Planning

We work closely with our clients to ensure that we receive as much information about new students as possible on our student referral form, so that we can select the most appropriate tutor and he or she can draw up an Individual Tuition Plan (ITP).
Effective Processes

Once tuition has begun, we have a set of processes which cover on-going quality control, progress reporting and student, carer and client SAIback. We also manage any issues which may arise, such as student absences or lateness and the quality of the tuition environment, and seek to maintain a good level of communication between ourselves, the tutor, the carer and any council representatives such as education officers and social workers. All our tutors must also agree in writing to abide by our Child Protection Policy, which has been specifically written to reflect the requirements of one-to-one tuition.
Tutor Quality

SAI Tutors takes tutor recruitment very seriously. All tutors must have a teaching degree and/or university degree in their chosen subjects; we also take up two references and interview each tutor as part of the registration process. Every tutor must have an Enhanced Disclosure from the Criminal Records Bureau which is less than three years old. Currently, approximately half of our tutors have Qualified Teacher Status, and clients can opt to only work with this group of tutors. The remainder are tutors with the minimum of a first degree with a particular emphasis on Maths, English, Biology, Physics and Chemistry qualifications.
