His big break came in 1999 on a cross-country flight from Florida to Los Angeles, after having delivered several paintings to a collector there. Upgraded to first-class simply because there were no seats left in coach, McElroy had the good fortune to sit next to one of the most powerful toy executives in the world from toy giant Mattel. Noticing McElroy relentlessly drawing next to her, the executive had hired him by the time they landed in Los Angeles to create interpretations of the #1 toy in the world....the ever classic Barbie. Mattel had already secured the rights from The Andy Warhol Estate to release Warhol's famous "Barbie" created years earlier. The toy company subsequently decided to include not one but two images by McElroy in the same packaging and box alongside Warhol in The Barbie Artist Series to commemorate Barbie's 40th Anniversary. A star was born. McElroy's work soon appeared in virtually every country of the world.

Since that time, McElroy's work is now owned by Madonna and Carlos Leon for their daughter Lourdes, Rosie O'Donnell, McDonald's Corporation, Absolut Vodka, Mercedes-Benz and other major names. He also created work for the Emmy-winning television show Mad About You with Oscar winner Helen Hunt for their finale season Sweeps Week episode Weekend in LA.

Splitting his time between New York, Los Angeles, Dallas and Europe, McElroy's face is unknown. But his art is everywhere.
