earworms MBT announced UK's Export Business of the Year

The company has just been honoured with the ‘international trade and industry award 2011 for small to medium sized business for export success’, in a prestigious ceremony at the House of Lords. The well deserved award was presented to company founders, Andrew and Marlon Lodge by Minister of Trade, Lord Green, in recognition of the company’s export success.

earworms MBT was founded in 2004 by the two brothers, following Marlon’s experiences as a language tutor. Teaching the vagaries of the English language to Japanese students, he would sometimes play his guitar to lift the mood. He soon realised his pupils found the ‘memory hook’ of a rhythm made the repetition and intonation of new words more memorable and helped reinforce useful words and phrases deep in the subconscious mind. Easy to understand, easy to reinforce and easy to recall, music seemed to trigger instant results for the students, who were not only learning a new, foreign language, but also enjoying the process at the same time.

A successful grant application by Andrew to develop this ‘musical memory concept’ resulted in a studio conversion in the family house and the earworms recording studio was ready to begin making music.

The technique, known as accelerated language learning through music, quickly became a no 1 best seller on iTunes USA audible books. In addition to selling direct from the company website, earworms created strategic partnerships with major international publishing houses such as Berlitz and Langenscheidt. Understanding the value and power of harnessing state of the art digital media, and developing its technologies in partnership with organisations such as Apple and Android, the company has maintained its industry edge in the form of MP3 downloads and Applications.

Andrew, earworms’ ceo, said “this award is very important to us – it provides recognition that our strategy was correct and the energy we have put into the business was well invested. We have ambitious plans to extend the range and depth of our courses and also to have a version for schools. We think language learning should be fun and natural and we are delighted to find so many people agree.”

The earworms course is currently available in 23 languages including Spanish, French, German, Japanese, Chinese (Mandarin), Russian, Portugese, Greek, Cantonese and Dutch. The multi based language training is offered in different combinations and the company already has a strong presence in Europe, USA, Australia, New Zealand and the Middle East. The themes follow closely the Common European Framework for language learning, a recognised benchmark of language proficiency, and earworms is focused on teaching language that is useful to the learner.

In the award ceremony, Lord Green emphasised that “language is essential for international trade and understanding of different cultures; earworms has proved that it is possible for anyone to grasp sufficient basics of a foreign language to build a rapport with local people.”

Andrew added “Given that the Minister is himself an accomplished linguist, this was definitely music to our ears”.
