East-West routes open following recent accident on State Road 528

"We are disheartened about this tragic accident and our hearts go out to the families of the victims," said Rob Varley, executive director of the Space Coast Office of Tourism in Brevard County, Fla. But for visitors with plans to come to the Space Coast, Port Canaveral or Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex, it should be known that the roads are open, he said.
Brevard County, known as the Space Coast, is home to top hotels, restaurants, beaches and attractions that span 72 miles along the East Coast of Florida.
"You can get to Port Canaveral and the Space Coast by taking State Road 528, The Beachline," Varley said. "But we want to make sure the people are careful when approaching the vicinity of Merritt Island. If you are driving Eastbound, be prepared to slow down after you come across the first causeway. If you're heading Westbound, also be prepared to have a little patience."
Those traveling in both directions on SR 528 will experience a delay in the Merritt Island area where an accident occurred leaving two people dead and a section of SR 528 and SR 3 (Courtenay Parkway) closed to traffic. There are off-ramps and on-ramps in the area that lead drivers off, and then back onto SR 528.
For those going to Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex, drivers who are on the beachside can take SR 3, from The Beachline, but upon the return from the attraction, it is suggested to take U.S. 1 to The Beachline.
It is also suggested that if visitors are heading to Cocoa Beach-area attractions, restaurants, the beach or hotels, State Road 520 is a convenient alternative to State Road 528. Drivers can get to SR 520 from Exit 31 off SR 528.
