There many different types of visas available for immigrants who want to come to the U.S. Still, not many of them grant the holder an opportunity of changing his or her status into permanent residency.
However, if you’re an investor there is a very feasible alternative: the EB-5 Immigrant Investor Visa.
Created by the American Congress in 1990, this visa category means to stimulate the U.S. economy through job creation and capital investment by foreign investors. Each year, up to 10,000 EB-5 visas may be authorized by the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS).
The Immigrant Investor Program, or EB-5, is eligible for entrepreneurs who want to invest in a commercial company in the United States and who also plan to create or preserve ten permanent full time jobs for qualified United States workers. This investment must be of $1,000,000, or at least $500,000, and should target to either a high unemployment area or to rural services.
Not only is the investor given the green card in this case. His or her spouse and unmarried children under the age of 21 also have the right to receive permanent residency. They are counted towards the annual cap of 10,000 visas.
Eligibility criteria to this visa is based on three things: having an approved Form I-526, Immigrant Petition by Alien Entrepreneur; being admissible to the United States; and immediate availability of immigrant visa.
Applicants who live outside The U.S. may become permanent residents though consular processing – when the USCIS works with the Department of State to issue a visa on an approved Form I-526 (Immigrant Petition by Alien Entrepreneur) petition when a visa is available. Applicants who already live in the country can become conditional permanent residents through adjustment of status.
It is always advisable to seek immigration help when applying for any kind of visa. Immigration policies in the United States can be very intricate and having an either unauthorized or unqualified consultant could harm one’s chances to become a U.S. resident or citizen. For more information on the Immigrant Investor Program, visit the USCIS website, http://www.uscis.gov, or consult an immigration attorney.
