Eclectic Mix of International Emerging Artists Selected for Publication
Seven artists working in a variety of mediums named as newest Visual Overture winners. Works include sculpture, mixed media, painting, tintype photography, and installation.
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
(Free-Press-Release.com) February 4, 2010 --
After much deliberation and careful consideration of more than 150 artist portfolios, seven winners have been announced for the Spring 2010 Visual Overture Magazine emerging artist competition.
The juror, Beata Szechy, had a difficult task in narrowing down the 165 qualified entrants from all parts of the world and from all visual art backgrounds. The one thing all entrants had in common? They were all emerging artists hoping to be published and seen.

http://www.visualoverture.com The seven international winners of the competition include three painters, two sculptors, one tintype photographer, and one mixed media installation artist. They are Barbara Horiuchi (USA), Patrick Hobaugh (USA), Marydorsey Wanless (USA), Soo Shin (USA), PJ Anderson (Canada), Laura Moretz (USA), and Daniel Oliveira (Portugal). Each artist selected received two pages of publication in Visual Overture Magazine, including 3-6 images of their recent work plus bio, artist statement, and notes from the juror.
Of particular interest are Soo Shin's mixed media conceptual installation artworks. Shin, originally of Korea, now resides in Chicago. Deriving her ideas from the hopes and failures of human relationships, she creates interactive installations that stimulate the emotions of the viewer. One piece, entitled "Hug Through a Door", allows two people to hug each other through an upright wooden door in which fur covered openings have been made to allow the interaction. Viewers cannot see the other person, suggesting unfamiliarity; and yet, the friendly emotions associated with hugs can be experienced.
Also included amongst the winners are more traditional artists such as Patrick Hobaugh, who creates oil portrait paintings, and Barbara Horiuchi, whose medium of choice is sumi ink on rice paper.
The seven artists together create an eclectic mix of international flavor from amongst which any contemporary gallery, curator, or collector could find something of their interest. The Spring 2010 issue of Visual Overture Magazine, in which these artists and other note-worthy art articles are featured, will be available February 8, 2010.
