Ecocert endorses concept of 'wellness' in ASSOCHAM herbal summit.

(Free-Press-Release.com) January 27, 2011 -- Wellness is a multi dimensional state and it is characterised by the existence of positive health in an individual as depicted by quality of life and a sense of well-being and we at Ecocert are in an effort to extend this sense of wellness to consumers worldwide through certification services for diverse products especially the herb based ones, said Dr Selvam Daniel, Managing Director of Ecocert India during his speech in the third International summit on Medicinal and Aromatic plants, spices and finished products, that was held on 15th - 16th January, 2011 in New Delhi.

Dr Daniel was invited in the summit to speak on the topic 'Certification of Organic Cosmetics & Nutraceutical Products'.

Associated Chambers of Commerce and Industry of India had organised this event, aiming to bring together cultivators, traders and manufacturers of medicinal plants by showcasing their new technological innovation, products and services to promote export in overseas countries which offers immense scope. Over 100 prominent companies participated in this event including foreign companies. 30 international buyers/speakers and regulators from Canada, Europe and Asia took part in this mega expo. The main aim of this mega event was to showcase continental, regional and local competence in this industry and to promote worldwide upcoming business of herbals, spices and finished products.

India has a strong base of herbs, herbals and ayurvedic traditional system of medicine which has gained acceptance worldwide.

The country has huge potential of medicinal plants of all qualities in abundance and contribute to 8% of global trade in this sector. India has abundant medicinal plants but also adequate knowledge on how to use them and thus India is in the forefront in this sector. India has robust technical and scientific network together with manufacturing units with 1600 medicinal plants under extensive use. In the manufacturing sector of cosmetics, neutraceuticals, and food supplements according to a study almost 960 medicine plants are traded in India and of which 170 species are traded in bulk quantity. As far total turnover from the export, trade grew from 640 crore in 2006-07 to 1166 crore in 2009 registered thereby 80.72% increase in two years.

People nowadays do not feel well owing to their lifestyles which exploit nature and which detach them from the nature. Consumption of herb based cosmetics and nutraceuticals cure 'illness' of body. But 'green' consumers seek for a particular feeling of wellness wherein they have a sense of leading a 'guilt-free' life. In the process they increasingly wish to know how the herbal finished products they are consuming are manufactured, where from the herbs are sourced, impact on nature etc. In the process they are also looking for the assurance that these solutions are indeed 'natural' and 'organic' and do not contribute to increase in their ecological footprint, said Dr Daniel.

Through its certification program for natural and organic cosmetics and nutraceutical products, Ecocert is promoting the concept of perpetual wellness. Consumption of these products keep the age old tradition of medicinal and aromatic plants, spices' use alive and offers at the same time the sense of perpetual wellness to its end consumers. A feeling, which comes from adoption of a particular lifestyle and is for a lifetime, and of which Ecocert is a proud promoter, said Dr Daniel.
