Egg Donation for Today's Family
Egg Donation for Today's Family
There have been a lot of changes in egg donation over the last several years, both in science as well as our idea of "traditional families." Let's put aside social caution and embrace diversity
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
(Free-Press-Release.com) September 9, 2009 --
I've worked for many years (9 to be exact) in the field of assisted reproduction. The advancements made in the industry in just the past 10 years is nothing short of mind boggling, even for someone like myself who’s involved in the day-to-day. Eggs can now be frozen and de-thawed with the same success rate as sperm through a process called vitrification. We can shine lights inside an embryo to determine genetic defects as well as guarantee, with 100% accuracy, the sex of the baby. There are scientists currently working on a genetic testing process which will allow us to rule out virtually all negative genetic defects in any embryo. It may sound a bit like science fiction when you read about advancements like these, but if you're ever in the situation where you may need an egg, sperm or embryo donation - this technology will feel more like a weight off your already burdened shoulders.
Yet with all this technology on our side, there is still one area in this field where time seems to stand still: the way that some egg donor agencies market their websites. In this day and age, traditional families aren't just a man and a woman of the same race – they’re households of people as diverse as genetics themselves. Where are all of our gay and lesbian couples? Single parents? Mixed race families? Faced with challenges identical to “traditional” couples, it’s amazing to me that many agencies have erred on the side of social caution when it comes to marketing their services to families, albeit “non-traditional” ones, in need.
At a 2008 ASRM conference in San Francisco, a panel came together to discuss this very topic. One of the concerns voiced by agencies was the fear that being "progressive" would alienate the traditional families from their client base. The whole point of displaying the diversity in families is so that every individual (or couple) who comes to an agency is equally represented, regardless of ethnicity, religion or sexual preference.
It's an ever-evolving field in an equally evolutionary world. Hearts and homes are ready and donors are willing.
