For nearly five straight years, Apple sales have outpaced their PC counterparts and the quarter ending December 2011 provided a bold exclamation mark. According to the research firm IDC, Apple’s year-over-year Mac sales surged by more than 23%, while the overall PC market grew a mere 3%.
What’s more, in the business segment, Mac sales were up 65% versus an increase of just 10% among all PCs; and, in the “very large” business segment, Mac growth topped 108% percent versus 21% for PCs. But then, in the all important education market, things get a little less predictable. There, IDC noted that Mac sales were actually down 2.7% while PC gains were up 3%.
According to Einstein Academic, a leading provider of software products to the education market, because younger consumers are much more likely to purchase and use Apple products, it is initially counterintuitive that PC growth should trump Macs in the education segment. One explanation, according to Einstein Academic, is that PC price points had been heavily discounted in the holiday season and cost-conscious students and educators have embraced the economic reality that Macs are generally seen as more expensive than their PC counterparts.
Einstein Academic further noted that given the high level of consumer passion for all things “i” – including iTunes, iPhone, iPod and iPad – the education segment is a leading indicator that will likely tilt North for the Mac market in 2012 and 2013. Further, because the overall base of the PC market is simply so overwhelming, at approximately 90%, substantial percentage gains for sales of Apple products are much more achievable.
