Granada, Spain, May 12, 2010--Granada, the Spanish city of the poet , Federico García Lorca, and the classical guitarist, Andrés Segovia, has an alluring new accommodation option especially for artists and writers. It’s a countrified cabin suite called “El Gallinero,” “the Chicken House,” and with it the Anglo-Spanish painter and printmaker, Maureen Booth, set out to create an ideal ambience for artistic creation, whether in visual art or writing. “An artists’ and writers’ refuge,” she calls this unique rural hideout, tucked into a sun-washed mountainside nine kilometers outside the city of Granada.

The Gallinero’s uniqueness lies in its uncluttered interior spaces, its tall beamed ceilings, perfect silence, soothing mountain views on all sides, a five-metre-long workbench, all designed for thinking and working, and not a turista in sight. All of this a mere 15 minutes from the Alhambra. Does it work? The Gallinero’s first few clients all agree that, besides its undeniable charm, the place has a purposefulness about it. All the installations and the setting itself seem to say: “No more excuses. Now you can get down to work!” For those who require a refresher course, Maureen provides workshops in painting and printmaking.
Maureen Booth has always been fascinated by the magical set of circumstances which inspire
creative work. “That’s the reason I came to Spain in the first place,” she says. “There was no way I could paint in the guise of a suburban housewife in the north of England. It was too cold, too wet, too gray, and with too many predictable distractions. I needed a special place to work, a place apart, time to myself, some tranquility and a bit of magic. Spain has provided me with all of these elements and more. For that I am eternally grateful.”

Maureen wondered for years if her “creativity recipe” could be reproduced for other artists and writers. Last winter she decided to put her formula to the test. “My husband and I decided to enlarge and renovate my original painting studio, which had been relegated to a storeroom for many years. We started with a floor plan on the back of an envelope—the only plan which ever made it onto paper—and from the very beginning the Gallinero took on a life of its own. We knew we wanted open spaces and lots of light, ample work surfaces, terraces and gardens, along with original art and creative decor. Serendipity and a brilliant young crew of local builders took care of the rest.”
The Gallinero is not for everybody. Though it has a broadband Internet connection, a printer and an MP3 sound system, there is no television. “Most people don’t come to Spain to do creative work,” says Maureen, “but a few do. Those are the ones who love the Gallinero.”
