Opposition leader Tony Abbott has emphasised his credentials as a ‘sensitive new aged guy’ by calling on his colleagues in the coalition and within the wider conservative political movement to stop personal attacks on Julia Gillard.

Mr. Abbott was responding to a recent spate of comments from Liberal and National Party politicians, campaign officials and sections of the media about the Prime Minister’s inordinately large earlobes and wooden leg.

He said that there was no place in modern Australia for comments on a person’s marital status, gender, hair colour, or the material status of major limbs and he urged his colleagues and the media to focus instead on more substantial issues, such as a person’s immigration status, religion, and sexual orientation.

“Julia Gillard should not be judged as a single, red-headed, wooden legged, childless woman. Its her private decision if she wants to live in sin, attract termites, and embrace a lifestyle that is an abomination in the eyes of God, “ Mr. Abbott told a campaign pep-rally for the Abbott Youth, a team of young volunteers under the age of 55.

When pressed on what personal qualities Australians should consider when casting their vote Mr. Abbott said “their policies, their track record in government, the circumference of their head, their ability to frighten Australians with exaggerated asylum seeker figures, willingness to embrace new prosthetic technologies, a capacity to simultaneously deny and accept scientific data on global warming, in short, the cut of their jib.”

With this in mind he urged fellow conservatives to focus on Gillard’s record as a habitual liar, her status as an indicted international war criminal, her former membership on the Politburo of the Chinese Communist Party, her close association with known people smugglers, and the fact she is borrowing “more than one gazillion dollars an hour to finance Labor’s reckless spending habits.”

The election campaign turned personal on Tuesday when maverick Liberal backbencher Wilson Tuckey told an audience of octogenarians that Julia Gillard was unfit to be prime minister because of her ears.

Leading the group on a pre-poll pig shoot, Tuckey told the gathering that it was young people like them who would decide the future of Australia and as such they had an obligation to think of “the international ridicule we face as a nation if someone with 12 inch (30cm) ear lobes is elected Prime Minister.”

“It is my opinion that with head handles like that Gillard should be mounted on a wooden plinth on the walls of a museum and not in the lodge.”

Mr. Tuckey brushed off criticism of his comments by saying that he was only saying, “what other people were thinking.”

Opposition leader Tony Abbott, whose own head has often been compared to a 1968 Volkswagen with its doors open, initially refused to be drawn on Tuckey’s comments, but was forced to intervene when the entire shadow cabinet were photographed with hubcaps taped to the sides of their heads and wearing red wigs.

It also follows a decision by Liberal Party federal Director Brian Loughnane to authorise a series of television commercials using a Julia Gillard impersonator.

Loughnane said the actor had been deliberately chosen to de-emphasise Gillard’s gender and appearance, to portray her in a “fair and accurate light”, and to demonstrate that the Liberal Party will not accept crude stereo-types in his campaign.

“We were looking for someone who was a fair resemblance to Ms. Gillard, but who could also capture her maniacal obsession with school building projects, ruthless Asian and African dictators, past history of steroid abuse, her role in the Rwandan genocide, close personal friendships with the leadership of al Qaeda, dodgy Asian arms dealers, and members of Italian crime cartels,” said Loughnane.

“But under no circumstances will we ever countenance or endorse personal attacks on her gender or marital status.”
