Electronic Medical Records (EMR) vs. Intra-Office Messaging

Drilling deeper into the statement this university hospital board member said further, "we have not been able to move one additional patient through any process per day."

This result is not unique. In the Journal of Medical Systems a few years ago a study by the University of Colorado College of Business indicated that EMR does not add significant throughput efficiency in all cases. If the bottleneck in an office is time spent on paper, then EMR will increase efficiency. If, on the other hand, the bottleneck is looking for people to tell them something, then an event driven messaging system is needed.

Intra-office communications manufacturers are seeing a resurgence of interest in their products in the ongoing quest for efficiency in the medical office. One such manufacturer, Kelkom Systems (www.KELKOM.com), has indicated they are seeing an increase in demand. "EMR solves paper problems," said Reed Dallye, VP of Kelkom. "We solve flow problems."

Doctors need to spend more time diagnosing the office problem before being talked into expensive solutions.
