FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Irvine, California, United States of America (Free-Press-Release.com) August 6, 2011 -- August 5, 2011 – Elephants have been parts of our imagination from childhood, thanks to Dumbo and the rest of animated elephants we see on TV, but this immense creature is very real. However, not all people know many elephant facts, which is why we continued to fancy this creature until we became adults. Other than that, it’s only a rare opportunity for most of us to encounter real elephants.

One of the most terrifying elephant facts is about the population of their kind. This is because elephants are fast reaching extinction. During the Ice Age, it was estimated that up to 7 Elephant species roamed the Earth. In fact, 170 fossils were found from various places all over the world. Sadly, there are only 3 known living species today. According to other elephant facts, one of the main reasons why these creatures quickly diminish in numbers is due to poaching or killing for profit. From this, it’s no longer impossible that later generations would only know elephants based on handed-down stories and pictures from history books.

The top reason why poachers go for elephants is because of their beautiful and precious ivory tusks. Stated as one of the most amusing elephant facts, these tusks are actually their long teeth. Elephants use these to get food and to move big things around. However, for some people, these tusks bring out their greed. Poaching is an illegal thing but it happens in many places where elephants thrive like in Africa. As these poachers go after their ivory, they end up killing the elephants in the process.

The numbers of elephants killed by poaching are very saddening and alarming. Other than that, this human activity had also led to an abnormality in nature. Now, many elephants are born tusk-less due to the genetic manifestation caused by poaching. Experts believe that if this continues, these creatures may have difficulty in all aspects of their lives such as feeding and mating. All of which could have grave outcome to their species.

Truly, elephants are one of the most fascinating animals to walk the earth, but these may not be for long due to poaching. There are many other amusing elephant facts that people should know. These will help in understanding their specie and preventing their imminent extinction.
