El Menia, the capital of the Governorate of El Menia, is known as the Smiling City and is also as The Bride of Upper Egypt. The explanations for the name "The Bride of Upper Egypt" vary. Some say it is El Menia's location at the border of Lower and Upper Egypt thereby representing the unification of the two. Others associate the name with the ancient Egyptian legend of the Bride of the Nile where a young girl was thrown into the Nile as an offering in the springtime, hoping the god of the river would be pleased and hurry the yearly floods to irrigate the land.
