As Sir Elton John's voice filled the Energy Solutions Arena in Salt Lake City, Utah, a well choreographed light display seemed to respond to the crowd as it displayed the words "Elton Wows 'Em." And he did. Although the show had to be re-scheduled and the dates printed on tickets tricked the few by displaying the wrong date, the crowd at the arena was in full force, singing along to legendary songs with the wonderfully current duo that is Sir Elton John and Billy Joel. One last minute guest revealed that he had planned to drive the distance to Vegas to see the show if necessary while another couple made the trip from Sin City into the land of Zion to coalesce to popular sounds of our lifetime.
"I had decided to drive to Vegas to see him (Sir Elton John)," said Sergeant LaBounty. A single father of two and a guard at Utah's state prison, LaBounty wasn't sure that he'd have the opportunity to go to the show in his home state, but was committed to seeing the historical performance. However, LaBounty was able to score a last minute ticket and get to the show without having to drive to Las Vegas to do it. Another couple did just the oppisite and drove from Las Vegas to Salt Lake and was personally thanked and welcomed by the gracious host between opening songs.
Favorites played by Elton John were a mixture of classics like "Rocket Man," "Saturday Night's Alright for Fighting" and "Tiny Dancer" as well as obscure scores such as "Zanzibar." Billy Joel added much to the show both in the way of a crowd pleasing presentation of songs such as "We didn't Start the Fire" and through jokes about Utah, his age and love. For example, after a beautiful rendition of "Just the Way You are," the musician immediatley offered "And then we got divorced" getting cheers from a few random guests.
As the night came to a close, the pair was again onstage together. In the same manner that they had opened the show and perhaps in the perfect setting, the two legends sat at their pianos, singing and compelling the multitudes to sing with them. The audience danced and was moved while reflecting on the subtle simaliarities of society that compose these gentlemens phenominal lyrics and bind us together as fans.
