Emerald Management Reviews celebrates 50 years with 50 winners

(Free-Press-Release.com) October 31, 2011 -- United Kingdom, October 2011 - Emerald Management Reviews, Emerald Group Publishing Limited’s prestigious abstracting service, is holding a double 50 celebration this month – recognizing the 50th anniversary of its launch and the 50 winners of its annual Citations of Excellence Awards.

First launched in 1961 as ‘Anbar Abstracts’ (named after the founder’s daughters, Ann and Barbara), Emerald Management Reviews has a long and illustrious history. It was the first abstracting and indexing service in the UK, and in 1988, became one of the first searchable electronic databases, being produced on the old 5¼ -inch floppy disks. In 1997, it became available online for the first time. The late industrialist Sir John-Harvey Jones once stated “I rely almost entirely on Emerald Management Reviews to ensure that I do not miss developments or thinking – I commend them to any busy person who is interested in management”.

Alongside the anniversary celebrations, the winners of Emerald Management Reviews Citation of Excellence Awards are also celebrating. Now in their fifteenth year, these distinguished annual awards recognize the 50 most outstanding articles published by the top 300 management journals in the world. With 15,000 reviews added to the Emerald Management Reviews database annually, receiving a Citation of Excellence is an extraordinary achievement and represents one of the highest accolades that an author can achieve.

And this year, to reflect the changing perceptions and assessment of quality in the publishing world, Emerald adopted a new approach to selecting the winners of these prestigious awards.

Working with Professor Anne-Wil Harzing, a recognized authority on journal quality and citation metrics, Emerald used a two-tier system based on citations from Harzing’s Publish or Perish software, and research impact. Professor Harzing comments, “I was happy Emerald chose to use Publish or Perish to make their first selection for the Citation of Excellence Awards. Publish or Perish is based on Google Scholar data, which provide a more comprehensive assessment of research impact than traditional sources for citation data such as ISI and Scopus. As a result it better reflects Emerald's mission to publish work with a broader societal impact.”
