San Diego, CA – On November 1, 2011 local professional oil painter, Cathy Lee, launched a unique art project that has never been attempted before on Kickstarter.com, the world’s largest funding platform for creative projects. As a continuation of her ongoing cannabis art series that began in January 2011, she will commit a year in 2012 to paint cannabis plants (aka marijuana, ganja, dank, mary jane, etc.). Her goal is to hand build and paint six-three original oil paintings, depicting the cannabis plant in her own abstract style.

With the ongoing controversies of the legalization of marijuana on both the state and federal levels, Lee implements her artistic talents to showcase the simple beauty of the controversial plant, without having to force her political views onto others. Named after real cannabis strains, like “Blue Dream,” “Haze,” and “Grand Daddy Purple,” she combines her colorful mixtures and graffiti art techniques to create a series that can be seen at four San Diego medical marijuana dispensaries and sold at her Etsy online shop.

As a project creator on Kickstarter, Lee seeks for funding and support for her project by enticing her audience with rewards such as limited edition photo art prints, calendars, silk-screened t-shirts, and original oil paintings. About Cathy Lee Art:

Since the age of five Cathy Lee has been heavily influenced by comic books, cartoons, graffiti art, and photography. Her mother bought her first oil paint set, along with William Alexander videotape at the age of nine. She too is a natural born artist, who mentored and trained Lee to be a skillful artist growing up. Her mother taught her the techniques of light and dark, which Lee still uses today. In 2010, she launched her professional art business called, “Cathy Lee Art Design Murals,” where she combines her accumulated skills and talents to create a visual experience on canvas. Lee hand mixes all of her paints from dry pigments and drying oils, and builds her own stretcher bars. She is an eco-conscious, financial-conscious artist. Through this process, Lee builds a deep connection with each piece she paints.
