English into Swedish Certification now approved by American Translators Association

(Free-Press-Release.com) February 5, 2011 -- After intense work by four Swedish translators, the American Translators Association can now offer Certification for English into Swedish.

The journey of establishing certification for English into Swedish for American Translators Association began in mid-2007. I was not involved from the start, but gladly accepted the challenge when I was presented with it. After a year of searching, I found three other translators willing to set aside time for this project, these people were Lisa Dahlander, Ingrid Olsson and Gunilla Medina. I think that all of us on the new language committee had no idea how much work it entailed when we agreed to become graders and establish certification for a new language pair. Fortunately, we all saw this as a challenge and as training for us as professionals, and we all agree that the process is better than any translation course taken or offered. The hardest challenge was to put aside time in our busy careers for unpaid work, and to learn the whole certification process. The Certification Committee provided plenty of training, materials and rules, all mandatory and valuable.
There are very few certification programs for translators or interpreters available in the U.S. on a national level. The ATA, with its 35+ year old certification program, is clearly the leading body that certifies translators in the U.S. I am happy to now be a contributing part of being able to provide English into Swedish certification in the U.S. Practice tests will begin shortly and real exams later this year.
