Many people suffer from migrane headaches. The majority of these patients are given medications to treat the symptoms, but the cause is left unknown and is not corrected. Current research shows that many patients who suffer migrane headaches do so because of TMJ problems. If the position of the mandible is incorrect it can lead to clicking and popping upon opening. The position of the jaw can also lead to migrane headaches, neck pain, shoulder pain, and ringing in the ears. There is a simple test patients can do at home who have painful clicking jaws. Patients can slide their lower jaw forward when they close so that the top front teeth and bottom front teeth hit edge to edge, and open and close back to that same position. When this pattern of opening is used, often times the jaw slides into the correct position and patients no longer hear the clicking. This condition is easily corrected with functional orthodontics. The process does involve wearing braces, but not for years.
