Eugene S. Perry Jr., 50 of Owensboro after being pinned by the semi trailer while hooking a dolly

January 20, 2012

Davenport police are investigating an accident at Estes Express Lines, 3815 W. River Drive, in which a man was injured when he was pinned against a trailer.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
(Free-Press-Release.com) January 20, 2012 -- The workplace death of a Kentucky man in Davenport remains under investigation by police and the Iowa Division of Labor.

Eugene S. Perry Jr., 50, of Owensboro, Ky., was found pinned by a semitrailer in the truck yard at Estes Express Lines, 3815 W. River Drive, at 8:46 p.m. Tuesday. He had been hooking a dolly to a semitrailer when the trailer rolled backward, pinning him.

Police and medics responded to the warehouse and transported Perry to Genesis Medical Center-East Rusholme Street, Davenport, where he was pronounced dead.

Perry was working alone at the time of the accident and could not say how long he was pinned before the accident was noticed. Police have not said whether cold and exposure could have contributed to Perry’s death, but the temperature around the time of the accident was 12 degrees, according to the National Weather Service.

In addition to Davenport police, an investigator from the Iowa Division of Labor is looking into the accident, said Jens Nissen, executive officer for the state agency. He said most workplace fatalities are investigated by the labor department.

“If there are any citations to be issued, due to violations, we must issue them within six months of the incident,”
Officials from the company, which has a corporate office in Richmond, Va., said they are cooperating with authorities.

“On behalf of everyone at Estes, our hearts and prayers go out to the family of Eugene Perry during this difficult time,” said Curtis Carr, vice president of safety for Estes Express Lines. “Safety is our highest priority, and we are working in full cooperation with local and state police.

“Since this is a matter of ongoing investigation, we are not at liberty to further discuss any details involving the accident. We hope that everyone will also continue to keep his family in their thoughts and prayers.”

Perry was a truck driver, but Estes officials declined to say whether the Davenport warehouse was part of his regular route.
